Avionik - A Dark Plan

I’ve been wanting to work more with choir libraries and this song, started in January, 2010, provided just the platform I needed. When you think of choirs you might conjure up images of movie trailers or religious iconography, but this audio assault is furthest from those ideals. The rhythm track was composed using 1 Battery kit and 2 other percussion kits in Kontakt – all put together manually using Cakewalk Sonar’s step sequencer. And in addition to the male choir patches found in Native Instruments popular virtual sampler, Kontakt, I’ve also used some from Soundiron’s most excellent Requium Light. Couple those with volume automation and convolution reverbs and you have what I present here today – A Dark Plan.

This is dark.  The production is excellent as far as hearing everything, and the performances are good.  It conjures up a strange mood, and though this might not be the song I want to take home and introduce to my mother, I definitely will listen to it another time or two.  On first listen, I thought that it might be a few measures too long, and the percussion parts are produced well but don't really generate the kind of interest or dynamics that I would like to hear.  This song needs nothing more than a few tweeks, and if it stays the same, it's still good.

    All the best,
    Lynn

Lynn, thanks for listening. I'm HUGE on percussion. It must be in my Metis genes. The more percussive parts, the more impossible for a real drummer or series of percussionists to play - the better. Having said that, I agree there could have been more peeling away at the layers to generate the kind of percussive dynamics you're talking about. With 3 seperate percussive VSTi's being used in this piece, I'll have to revisit my workflow to see how best to edit the sub-tracks down such that I have more control. I tend to compose rhythms and lock-in the beats within the VSTi's themselves - only then exporting stereo bounces. But maybe I need to either edit the midi components first, or bounce the components individually.

Loved the percussion in this. I tend to use multiple layers of drum tracks myself as i find that the best way to work for me.

The mix of organic and mechanical sounds works really well and it's one of my fave combinations in electronica.

Inventive use of the stereo field.

    Enjoyed it. Good one.

Another very cool and inventive piece.  I wouldn't have a clue how to start something like this.  I'm impressed!
