Awes - Doubt
Hi all, been a while since I've popped in here. Got a new project on the go which I'm kind of struggling with. Mixed the first track, quite an old song, somedays I'm reasonably happy (for someone with limited mixing ability and even more limited vocal ability!!) with it, other days I end up tweaking it as I'm not a fan of how it sounds I have some time away once I'm happy, but each time I listen to it, my opinion changes. I'm probably too close to it so would appreciate some third party input, so fire away... https://soundcloud.com/awesmusic/doubt I was probably listening to a lot of early Radiohead and Hope of the States at the time of writing this..

Not one to comment on vocals because. Generally the mix sounds OK though it does sound narrow other than the spread of the reverb. The Piano at the end was nice, I would be tempted to try and spread the guitar and the piano either side of the vocal. Thanks for sharing.

I liked it. I could definitely hear the Radiohead in there. I agree that it could be opened up a bit. I also wanted to hear the whole thing develop more of an edge before it transitioned into the piano ending. Maybe a little guitar crunch as it progresses? And maybe a little more bite to the singing too. But that's just my ear. Great tune.

Thanks for the listen and feedback chaps, much appreciated!! As much as I'd love to improve the vocals, unfortunately, my talents here have been exhausted, I've definitely gotten my monies worth out of Melodyne!! Taken on board width issues, will revisit that. Think guitar was panned circa 50% L and piano 45% R. I think they were then panned that again in the send to the reverb bus. Probably why reverb sounds wider than the dry. think when I originally started this, must've assumed that the reverb send must've been central so needed panning too. Again, thanks for the comments, good to know I'm on the right track

Sorry I think you misunderstood the vocal is fine I do not comment on vocals because Wookiee singing kills at a parsec. so it is not appropriate for me to say a thing.

Thanks for the comments people! Yeah, I'm not great at upbeat songs. Have a few more that I'm hoping to have up today/this week, a common theme is that none of them are particularly upbeat jamesyoyo if you want, PM me and I will mix this for you.
Yeah sure man, always happy to hear other peoples take on music. How the same piece can end up completely different. I'll drop you a PM now.

I like that!! I can't really comment on the mix because I'm listening on tiny computer speakers, but the song is quite good. I really like the guitar interlude beginning at 1:10. That could almost be a song in itself. And the piano was a great addition at the end. Very very well done. Best of luck with your music!!

Cool tune, love the laid back yet dark feel. Nicely different style. Mix-wise, I think it's the drums, one chugging guitar part (I think?) and vocals right down the middle that are congesting things and fighting for space. The guitars at the outside are more transparent and clear, even the slightly dirty ones. If I were doing this, I'd spread the drum kit pieces a bit more and maybe EQ the snare so it's out of the vocal's way, and pan the middle guitar out a bit.

Woah woah woah... Hope of the States... I freaking LOVED them and I think I forgot they existed... Now I need to go look up if they've put out anything new recently. Anyway, love this track. Totally has that feel (and Radiohead). Half way through I switched to the newer mix and I definitely like the newer mix better. The way the vocals sound is better and just overall I think it works even better. But yea, great track. I would totally listen to this. Just followed you on Soundcloud.

I The tune was mostly dry so I added amp sims to carve out individual spaces for them. The vocals ran through Nectar 2 on a custom patch. I added a double vocal in that one spot and harmonized to the lead vocal. The biggest problem with the original version was the muddieness introduced by the floor Tom, which had an awful ringing resonance that stepped over the kick and bass. That Tom was really carved up in my version, and I took a lot of the room out of the drum mix and substituted a nice early reflection reverb. I played that short lead to add some Interest in the middle section. The piano was cloned and modded with a distortion plug and then lead off with it before fading the original piano over it. It also supports the end piano to give it more grit. I mastered through Ozone 6 with a slight dip at 560hz.

Unfortunately not First album is definitely up there in my top 10 - opening track in pretty instense. After 'Lost Riots' they released 'Left' which was OK, took a while to click for me - doesn't help the guitarist/songwriter hung himself after they completed the first album. Then they split up after 'Left'. Lost Riots is a pretty incredible album though, very dar.!
