Same here. Started piano lessons at 8. Studied under the soloist for the St. Louis Philharmonic from 10-12. Two hours every Saturday. And she could tell within 15 minutes how much time I'd practiced the preceding week. Brutal. But it formed the basis for everything I've done since. And that was 50+ years ago. I'll never forget her. I'll never forgive her. I'll never be able to thank her enough. I've posted these links elsewhere on this forum, but this woman deserves another view. Stroke at 62. Left hand only. 80 when these videos were shot.

I certainly wish I had perservered with lessons-especially at that age,but football seemed more important -I can play most instruments but have mastered none and my advice to all young musicians is to learn the basics,no matter how boring and pointless they seem because they will serve you well later and hindsight is not much help when ingrained bad habits hinder your playing. cheers

I love Victor and his artistry, and found some truth and understanding in what he talked about. But this was not an awesome Ted Talk or anything else. Inspiring, yes. Informative, no.
Sorry.

Sorry.
Whether or not you accept the "awesome" adjective depends on whether you're using the word literally or in the vernacular meaning as a synonym for "excellent". That talk was indeed excellent, and inspiring. But it did not invoke fear, which is the literal definition of "awesome".

"Tubular" is acceptable, in this instance, as a metaphor.

Music is not about notes and chords! My poem is not about the computer or monitor or letters! It's about how I was able to translate it from my insides!

Hi, That was a nice, check that ... very nice, talk about music. Now you know how I feel, listening to so much music and getting lost inside of it senseless, and not having had the chance, to learn an instrument, or have a teacher that could help teach a dreamer ... to use his ability and gift, instead of constantly have to "translate" what he sees in music and people continually deny him that it exists and can be done! Yes, the translation is a different language that is hard for all to understand. But, as Victor stated, you didn't trash the child and question! You let it go because it was funny and fun! But in describing things here, sometimes (many of you are tops in my book!), it is really difficult. I, STILL, hear music in my head, and in my dreams, that I have never heard, and some of those instruments are still "invisible" to my imagination, thus, my "looking" for music, is always a search for something that no one else does, or has, or has heard, or has seen. It's been said, there is always hope, but at 64, I'm getting a bit tired of the word "hope". It happens or it doesn't, and I guess that for me, listening is the only high I can have! And I disagree with the bottom end of Victor's words ... the bomb to make love, or the like ... specially when in so many places they use that excuse to create more people to hate, because they do not know, or have marginalized love and hate to an attitude. Like we don't do the same thing! I think it is an honorable thing to think that you can do something for someone ... but I have seen, all my life, amidst a bunch of literary big name folks, that they can be just as good, as they can be bad! PERIOD! And it all depends, on how you translate and define what you saw ... and has nothing to do with your likes and dislikes ... and in so many ways, this is the world of lost children, where the dreams are stolen! I'm not a victim ... I simply did not have the chance to follow my dream! Between change of cultures and languages, you end up losing a lot of yourself, until you can find words to define yourself with ... and then get punished later because no one understands you! Sorry Victor, I know you mean well, and that is a nice talk, but not everyone has the "chance" to get out of the ghetto and make a life ... when you are not in America! This is the land of dreams, except that no one wants to see a friend make it big, because that means the friends failed! And the boards are littered with people that are not constructive. As you well know, that most teachers only know the notes and the chords! Nothing else!
Music is not about notes and chords! My poem is not about the computer or monitor or letters! It's about how I was able to translate it from my insides!

Hi, I'm still looking for a music instructor ... had one several years ago, that was intent on me learning some chords first ... and then I played for her, the two music pieces I created, and all she could say was ... the notes are all wrong ... despite the pieces being complete in their own way ... they just were not a ... "song"! Again, hearing the inner music is tough! Even worst when the outlet is limited, but I guess I have to teach myself!
