Axe FX II (guitar Processor) ate my soundcard drivers???

Just got the Axe Fx II and am running through a Presonus Firebox. Test drove it running from the Axe FX II output to the input of the soundcard, and listening through Cakewalk's Sonar. Ran Axe Edit and edited some patches...all's well.

Then I updated the firmware to 2.0 and things got weird.

Now Sonar doesn't show my Presonus inputs anymore, just "Axe FX II AISO drivers." I tried adjusting the settings in the Audio panel, and on the Advanced Tab the Axe FX ASIO drivers (not even sure there is such a thing) are there and the Presonus Firebox ASIO drivers are greyed out (see pic).

How do I fix this? Without the Presonus inputs in Sonar, there is no sound. Not sure where the Axe FX II ASIO drivers came from, but they don't work. Oh, and Axe Edit now says there isn't a connection between it and the Axe FX II. WTF?

    Hey there!

It's just a seting thing. My guess is that the Axe FX can be used as an audio interface so that you can record straight through the USB port and into Sonar. When using ASIO drivers an aplication can only use that one device and when another tries to access it it will either not see the drivers or mess up the first one that currently holds on to the drivers. This is in very broad technical terms...

It's easily remedied tho. or at least should be. Just make sure in Sonar preferences that the Axe FX drivers is unchecked. Restart and it should find the Presonus again and ignore the Axe FX. The Axe FX editor may be happily chugging along with the Axe FX.

If this fails, you should remove the Axe FX ASIO drivers and see if you can use some other types of drivers with it or use the editor with a different computer - not ideal, I know.

But give my first suggestion a spin, I think it should work

Looking at your screen capture, it looks like the Presonus inputs are still there in your input drivers. Try unchecking the AXE-FX II input drivers and you should be able to select the presonus inputs.

How are you liking the AXE-FX II? I'm extremely enviouse.

HTH:  Bingo!  You were exactly right...problem solved.  For the future I'm going to use my laptop to run Axe Edit to change patch values while my desktop runs Sonar.

ADM3:  I'm still in the honeymoon phase with the Axe-Fx II.  It absolutely sounds like the models it claims to, but each person's concept of what a particular amp should sound like might vary.  Probably more room to gripe with a live setup as how you amp the Axe-FX II might affect the outcome.  the gripe from recording musicians is going to be how well it nails certain sounds.

For me, I'd love to nail some specific tones, but ultimately want to create my own.  I like the idea of a realistic modeling solution that can get you from Marshall Plexi to Vox AC30 to Fender without skipping a beat.

Man, I'm glad that worked out for ya! Have fun with Sonar and the AxeFX!

Make sure you post some evidence of your killer guitar tones in the songs forum when you're done honeymooning
