There are a few stages to setting up a Controller. I don't have the Axiom Pro 49, but I do have an Axiom 49 - I think it will be very similar (if not the same). I am going to assume that you have the drivers installed and that the Axiom is working to some extent.
1:
Setup the Midi Device: Preferences (P) > Midi > Devices. Make sure the Axiom is checked for input. There may be two Axioms (A & B), so check both. There is no need to set the Outputs to the Axiom unless the pro has motorized faders, or displays that link with Sonar. Mine doesn't, but I don't have the Pro
2: Setup the Controller: Preferences (P) > Midi > Control Surface: Choose to install a new Control Surface (upper right) > Choose "Act Midi Controller" > Set the input to the Axiom, and the Output to none (unless there is reason to set an output).
3: Setup the Control Surface to Use an Axiom Preset: Find the Control Surface Module in the Control Bar > Choose "Act Midi controller" > click on the Control Surface Properties button > use the dropdown to find an Axiom preset. There are no choices for the Pro, but I am sure the 49 choices will work. Don't forget to set the Axiom to that preset.
That gives you track control, transport, etc... Now we move on to controllers soft synths or effects.
All Soft Synths and effects will work pretty much the same way. For these, we use ACT.
1: Insert a Synth of your choice, and set the MIDI Input to the Axiom (choose Omni if you are not used to Midi)
2: Open the Soft Synth and near the upper right, click on the "Act Learn Button"
3: Highlight a Control on the soft synth then move a slider or knob on the Axiom. Repeat with another controller, repeat, repeat, repeat until you have assigned everything you want to assign.
4: Click on the "Act Learn Button" again - this time it should tell you how many controls it has assigned - Choose yes to keep those assignments.
Now every time you open that synth - the Axiom will operate the controls you have assigned.
NOTE: This takes some trial and error and will lead to some frustration. Stick with it, I find Act works pretty well and the problems I encounter are almost always human error. The most common problem is that some controls on the Axiom cannot be assigned - so you need to learn which ones these are and avoid trying to use them.
