BASS GUITAR - has anyone seen or used this?

Watching Steve Harley & Cockney Rebel playing/miming Make Me Smile (Come Up And See Me) on my "Top Of The Pops 40th Anniversary" DVD yesterday I happened to notice something 'unusual' about the bassist's P-Bass.

Right up against the bridge and under the strings appears to be a piece of sponge:

I've never seen this before - I'm guessing it must be there to dampen the strings?

If you're not familiar with the tune, here's the VIDEO I took the screenshot from - you can see he plays the bass finger style and plays a lot of notes; my best guess is that he's using the sponge to help keep the notes separate and stop them ringing into each other. I don't think it's got anything to do with the fact that they're miming - the amps wouldn't be on I'd imagine.

Anyone else seen or used this technique before?

Yup, that's exactly what it's for.  It was a pretty popular thing for bassists to do from the 50s to the 70s.

Ditto... the sponges or cloth, or whatever the player thinks sounds best.....kinda like a drummer using blankets and duct tape with cloth pads on his kit ....for the same reason.  snares even have dampers built in.

    they work to varying degrees.

The sponge is also considered an upgrade for the Jazzmaster.

Jonbouy is ever trying to put pillows over my entire bass body. He says it sounds better that way. I say I can't hear a thing. He says it's all right mate, we'll fix it in the mix.

Don't let the corporations in this thread. Next you'll start seeing "Custom Bass Foam - All Models Available only $99.95. Designed by our own Bass Specialist Scientist" in all the stores.

It's easier to control stray harmonics that way, I think total encapsulation in formaldehyde foam is a better solution for the Bapu bass collection as it will preserve the instruments in the long run to. Don't forget to leave an access hole so we can plug it in though.

I'm always looking for ways to help my rhythm section team mate.

On the other hand, a well-timed taser can be entertaining for (almost) everyone.

    Hi,

He's not the only one that ever did things like that ... maybe someone should check out Tony Levin's story about diapers!

When it comes to getting an effect or sound that you want, all is fair play ... so ... just try it ... what you got to lose?

As a wise Guy once stated from his holy chapala ... none of the hits, none of the time ... prevents you from becoming just another turkey in the middle of all the other turkeys!

I'm just afraid that all the snot and gunk would slide down the strings into the sponge and i'd be too disgusted to pull it out from the bridge...

It allows us finger-style players to get a dead upright sound without palm-mute.. and using the thumb... i practice with the mute/no amp..

Dead upright sound is right on. I use foam on my P Bass but not my Jazz.
