...you have got to be kidding me... I've been waiting for half the stuff X3 has finally implemented, for years... I've been waiting for BFD3 for years... I'm not 100% sure if this was the right forum for that post, but I appreciate it anyway... Thanks for the heads up!

Dammit! I hope I can still scrounge up a cheap upgrade to 2 somewhere. It's been on my bucket list for a year but the move totally screwed that up.

I just bought it and started D/L'ing the upgrade. I may have some time to play with it later tonight and if so I'll try to post some results.

So, if you've been looking for some first impressions, here's what I think so far:
    1. The DL is enormous. Like 39 Gigs.
    2. It's very different than BFD2. I've been playing with it for a couple hours now and I'm just starting to find my way around.
    3. So far the new kits sound nice, but...
    4. the room seems a bit "short" so far and I'm not a giant fan of the included snares (that's probably a personal taste thing though)
    5. No simple kit presets that I've found so far. That is, the presets are all things like "BFD3 Blues" or "BFD3 Country". No "Kit 1 flat" etc
    6. The Room, Amb and OH mics are bundled into an "AmbMix" channel. In order to get to the individual channels you have to expand that "AmbMix" channel. Took me 20 minutes to figure that out. OTOH, I'm not the sharpest knife in the drawer, so YMMV.

All that said I like it so far. There does seem to be quite a learning curve. If you're anything like me you shouldn't expect to be able to quickly use it out of the box, even if you do have experience with previous versions and lots of other drum modules.

Oh, seems to play nicely in Sonar, but the 32bit DLL and the 64bit DLL have the same name so you may need to be a bit careful. I renamed the 32bit DLL so it wouldn't be found on a VST scan. No VST3, but that's not something I'm terribly concerned about.

If you buy the product as a downloadable product you'll download a program installer and a sound installer "ticket". The "ticket" gets opened by the FXPansion licensing app which then loads the content.

Let me know if anyone has specific questions and I'll try to answer...

Does the three letter acronym "BFD" mean what I think it does?

I still think Fxpansion's BFD is a better drum emulator than XLN's Addictive Drums, the depth of control is just deeper.
Where Addictive Drums excels, is at getting fairly decent drum kits a lot quicker. If I want to go deeper, it's just not there, for me.
In general, the XLN room microphone controls don't sound as good to me, and so far - snares don't sound as good in my mixes.

I also think it's great that Cakewalk has "upgraded" their Session Drummer to Addictive Drums in Sonar X3a, 'cause it's a few notches better.

     . . . now waiting for the BFD3 demo to arrive . . . looks like a lot of changes . . . hope they haven't wrecked it.

Is it right what I heard that there is NO discount for BFD2 owners? i.e. we all have to pay full price?**

Not sure that UI is to my liking - I may well pass on this one.

**Edit: Ok, I just checked Fxpansions website and there IS a discount for upgraders.

To upgrade is $199 for the boxed version $149 for the DL version. This is for BFD2 owners.

Yep, $199 shipped in a box on a 64GB USB memory stick; $149 for the download (38GB). The same amount of data on both, they only make USB sticks in powers of 2.

    5. No simple kit presets that I've found so far. That is, the presets are all things like "BFD3 Blues" or "BFD3 Country". No "Kit 1 flat" etc

Look in the KITS browser as opposed to PRESETS. The PRESETS tab has processed kits, the KITS browser has unprocessed. Note the "Reset when loading" toggles in the KITS browser which allow you to reset the mixer to its initial state when loading a new kit.. or not if you prefer.

Thanks Angus, but even the kit page has what seems to be "mix 'n match" kits organized by style...things like "BFD Blues 1 JM" and "BFD Country 2 JM". What I was really hoping for was some flat kits that were as recorded. For example, the docs reference "Kit 1(Metal)" and "Kit 2 (Indie)". Is there a way to get those kits loaded up without selecting each piece?

Oh, and what do the letters at the end stand for (like "JM" in the examples above)?

    Thanks
