BFD in Sonar

Sorry if this is noob... it's cause I'm noob.

Can someone direct to a link that details the process of getting drum tracks down in Sonar with BFD? I've played around with it, looked at the manual, but I'm just really having a hard time... things I want to know are: can I just load up my kit, assign different pieces to PC keyboard keys and record me playing into an audio track in Sonar, move beats around, and so forth... or do I need a real midi keyboard? If I need to "program" the beats, how do I do that? On the piano roll screen? I've played around with that but they sound too robot.

Please keep in mind that I'm new to this stuff... I don't really understand the mechanics of DXi's and Midi and how they relate to an audio project, I only really understand the capturing audio aspect to Sonar. I've read Sonar Power a while back but I guess it didn't sink in... I need step by step.

You should get a midi keyboard so you have more velocity control. But when you use the piano roll manually and insert the hits with the mouse, all the velocities will be the same. So go to the controllers under the roll and try adjusting the velocities, this will give you a more natural sound.

OK, thanks. I can see this is gonna be a long process. Where exactly in the piano roll screen do I adjust velocities? Also I thought BFD had some sort of 'humanizing' built in..

Hopefully you've got a manual with your "NEW COPY" of BFD. And, if indeed you do, please check out page 46 for the section titled "Humanization Panels". This will give you info on both Humanize Timing and Humanize Velocity.

The manual is only 68 pages long but it's well worth reading thru. I thoroughly recommend it.

    Regards,
