BSOD when shutting down MC5 (win XP)

At the weekend I decided to install MC5 on my netbook (running Win XP) so that it isn't hogging the family laptop.

All is well with the operational side of things but after closing MC, when I shut down the netbook I get a BSOD with a message starting STOP C000021a Fatal System Error. The netbook then restarts before I can shut it down again from the logon screen.

I can use MC with no problems but this shutting down problem is becoming a bit of a chore.

Any ideas on a fix?

I'm not to familiar with netbooks in general. I've read some things that suggest they are not up to the task of handling some of the more intense process programs, and I would include any DAW in that category.

As to what could be happening at the close, I have no idea.

How is latency and other typical issues on the net book?

I always looked at net books as a lower cost alternative to a full blown laptop. More of a way for people to do email and cruise the net without the size and cost of a laptop, and as a result, the processing power, while still substantial, is reduced from that of a lappy. Most people that use lappy's for this purpose are using overkill as opposed to what they actually need....email, Facebook,  Facebook games, surfing the net.... all possible on a netbook with it's smaller size and lower power.

BSOD's always tell you at the top of the screen which component caused the error.  you need to look at that info and see what driver/hardware/program caused the BSOD.

BSODs are usually caused by drivers.  I've never had a netbook - usually they are underpowered for DAW tasks.  but the soundcard driver would be my first suspect.  I assume you're just using your netbook onboard soundcard.  the onboard soundcard of even a laptop or desktop is not "up to par" for most DAW applications.

you can try changing to MME driver mode and see if that helps, but i'm not sure you have enough power with a netbook for this to work anyway.

I am actually only using MC 5 on the netbook to modify and playback MIDI files.

When I installed it I did wonder if it would be up to the job, but was pleasantly surprised as it operates flawlessly. The netbook has hardly any other applications installed so I guess that helps.

If I can't fix it it's not a major issue, I'll just switch back to the laptop but, by coincidence, I used it last night and for the first time it shut down just fine.

If it crashes with a BSOD when it's shut down, I wouldn't exactly call that flawless.

But I guess you could do that and live with the consequences..... just save the files before you shut down and don't rely on MC to auto save the work upon shutdown.

I would use the lappy since it doesn't close in this manner.
