I think if we look at it as all routings wind up going to the master buss that may make it clearer. You can have any number of "sub buses" that will at some point output to the master buss. One can make this as complicated or as simple as they wish. Also some do use multiple "master buses" for various reasons one being surround sound. But stems are often used for motion pictures and video reasons. In this setup the need for a single master buss is often not required. For ease of mix down I use a single master buss as my source for export of a stereo file. All signals go to it however they get there; to that one master buss.

I should also add that there are lots of ways to use busing. In one large project I have it has more buses then it has tracks. There is no right way to work with buses but there are fairly standard ways to work with them that have proved useful over the years.

ba_midi Wicked, I suspect you didn't read my post fully. Yes, the Rythmn Section (Ryt Section) Bus goes to the Master Bus. Um, well then doesn't that make the whole point moot? To me, using a bus as a subgroup master or having one more bus to hop through doesn't change the fact that all the audio is getting funnelled through a master bus. Sheesh man, go nuts!

Haha, well, I am nuts :P But, again - this is not a new technique. From my early days working in some of the top NYC major studio to today working in DAWs, "sub-bussing" is (and probably always will be) an often used technique. But yes - the MASTER BUS is, and probably always will be, the final destination to the Mains :)

Oh for sure, I'm not contradicting you. The great thing about buses is that if for some reason you need to break out another level of elements you can easily do that. I thought you were saying that your subs and, er, sub-subs sidestep a "master" go straight to the audio outs. Which, again, wouldn't be wrong either. An example I use all the time: percussion. I route those to a PERC bus, but then they also flow into my DRUMS sub bus (well, usually anyway). But if they're not mixing well into that I just route them to the MASTER and tweak my processing.

DSProductionz To everyone who posted thanks for the entertaining debate from my very simple question... Hehehehhe! I had no idea I would ruffle up so many feather asking this. Simple questions are hardest to answer. There is no such thing as "you should" here - this is the freeway - everything is possible, and the dumbest questions leads us on new paths. I'm (because of your question) for the first time trying to route my 9 effect busses to the same bus, before the master bus ..... A little bit of destortion on the mastereffect bus, and ......

Besides a stereo bus is a London bus. Its got two decks. A stereo buss is OK though and not an import. Then there is court ordered busing. I don't think any one here will go for that; not on my mixer anyway.
