"Back Home Again" - fighting the current recession **NEW YOUTUBE VID**
After weeks of hardware trouble I've managed to finish something! Dedicated to the many people forced to leave Irish shores due to the current economic recession. Here it is; Back Home Again I hope to make a video of this and share it with many of my friends who are abroad, but would like some ears to listen to it first see if anything jumps out. Have to give myself a pat on the back too, managed to teach myself the chromatic harmonica in a week, plus its a C chromonica and this is in Emajor, horrible starting out!! Would this be considered country/folk? Regards, Cian _____________________________ ***EDITED 04/Sept - New Youtube video for song*** http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GWO9_WM-B04 _______________________________

That just knocked me out... Beautiful... I'd use melodyne dna feature, and fix those few sour harmonica notes... do that and it will be perfect... lovely...

Cian, Best thing I have ever heard from you. Just terrific. I would make some changes mix-wise and arrangement-wise, but that is more personal than critique.

Cool guys, yes I did pour soul into this one. Frank, would you take a moment to just give me the time location of those few sournotes, just to see what stood out to you? I I dont have melodyne dna! I can redo some parts if needed though. Jim, glad to hear. Im sure there is a better way to mix this,Im too close to it right now so I dont think I can improve. Im guessing that you would have that instrumental changed or placed different? Cian

There is a series of passing notes starting at 2:30... they're screeming out loud, " fix me" I do love everything else...

Yep, a lot of places. 01-05-07. 2:17 and 2:46 at least for the harmonica. It seems when you slur up to the note, it seems it just don't seem to come out right. Have you thought about changing it to a fiddle part maybe?? Otherwise, it's a good song to me.

Truly an outstanding song and performance, Cian. I could feel your heart in this. For me (whose great grandparents left Ireland many years ago under similar circumstances) there was too much to love about this to even bother trying to make suggestions. Exceptional, great (running out of adjectives)... nuff said!

thanks for feedback,i need to know what stands out in a bad way. notnat, your referring to those few high notes that are a bit "merged" and that run down passing notes 2:35? I see spacealf, although what are you referring to with "01-05-07"? you right a fiddle would also suit, but the harmonica symbolises a little more homesickness for somereason,so ill stick with it. I do understand that Im not going to get the harmonica sounding great with the little time I had so I really need to practice a lot more to hit the correct notes bang on. Thank philz, greatly appreciate the kind words. seems to be a recession cycle in this country, the next one wont be too far on the horizon! Cian

This is great Cian. I heard the weird notes on the harp also. I would've lked to hear the vocal a little bit more present and less wet myself. Maybe try a longish delay instead of/and/or with the verb (turned way down). You sing this very well. let it shine, don't pull it back.

Very nice. I'd like to hear more bass out of the acoustic guitars, at least equivalent to the piano sound.

Cheers timidi, I will lay back on the reverb a tad so, always inclined to go a biy heavy with it anyway. I never tinker with reverb settings, just last the usual stuff on. Is there a delay on reverb or do you mean the actual delay effect in sonar? jsaras, I high pass filtered the guitar relatively high and I suppose since there is no bass and kick in this song, then I can afford to let a little more low end poke through. I will do that. Thanks Frank,I will defo practice and redo that harp bridge. Thanks for your time guitarhacker. Cian

Sure Cian.... I edited a bunch of it... I really did like the song. I was going to add some comments on melodyne. I use The Melodyne Editor..... It will, and does, fix alot of tuning issues in a transparent manner. Well worth a look see. It would put that harmonica right where it needed to be.

Cian, The song made me think of all of my ancestors who left the Old World and never looked back - or didn't seem to anyway. Made me think too much to pay any attention at all to the production. Good song. good subject.

I never tinker with reverb settings, just last the usual stuff on. Is there a delay on reverb or do you mean the actual delay effect in sonar? Yes, I mean delay. (Well, reverb is delay. Just all smashed together). I guess it's personal preference, but, I just find that reverb, unless judicious, really washes stuff out, Delay can add the same space but also let the vocal be a little more present. Don't know if you recorded to a clik or not, but if you did, just start by trying out some 1/8s, 1/4s (and dotteds) matched to the tempo (auto) and blend to taste. Using envelopes on the effect sends of both works good too. But, I think my point was that the vocal was just too far back (for my taste). I don't know if your shy or not:) And, as Herb and Frank mentioned, Melodyne is a wonderful thing. No need to be shy when you have Melodyne..:)

What I posted was about the seconds in the song where I heard the harmonica seeming to slide up to the correct note. Maybe it is suppose to be that way, but for some reason it doesn't seem to come out good enough or it seems as if you are searching for the correct note on the harmonica. I guess I always heard a harmonica player (and not all that many - mainly blues songs) come in exactly on the correct pitch of the note on the harmonica and do wavering I guess with how they blow or exhale (inhale) into it. I suppose it be hard to do at first so I am sure they had more practice with it probably and had been playing blues harp for quite awhile.

Herb/timidi,just noticed that there is a 30day full trial of melodyne editor, and its not overly expensive, if its a good tool I may just purchase. gcolbert, thanks you so much. Most of my granduncles/aunts left for america during those times last and have also not looked back, in fact they have been very successful. glad you liked it. spacealf, those notes you were referring to were actually intentional and I dont mind them as much, I am more concerned with the notes that are meant to be correct that seem to be blending with other notes and dont have a clear reed sound. Thanks again though bro. Cian

My grandmother often talked about her father coming over on a boat from Ireland when he was 13, so I guess my roots are from there too. I only realized yesterday, which is odd timing, since I'm listening to this today, that he and his family must have been fleeing an earlier recession. Anyway, I'm mesmerized by your voice and the beauty of this song so much that I hardly noticed the mix or arrangement. Except to note that I enjoyed it very very much. I kept listening to the harmonica since everyone was talking about it, but it didn't bother me. You DO deserve a pat on the back for learning it so quickly! :) Anyway, I had to go back to listen to the song as a whole. The piano is great and this time I can hear the words better...most likely because I'm paying for attention. Yes, all around a great song, great performances and great production, IMO. :)

Great song. I agree about the reverb and there were a couple of sour notes on the harp. By the way, I'm Irish, German, and Iroquois Indian. I'm very proud of my heritage and where my family is from. Sorry to hear the recession is hitting your country too. Sounds like it's a world wide problem.

I finally managed to muster up some kind of video for this song that I wrote. It aint overly professional and I had to make do with the limited video shots I had etc, but I certainly went for it. I also slightly adjusted a few things in the song, such as the harp again a little less verb on the main vocal etc. Please take a look and if your logged into youtube, gimme a like please, I dont want my covers to overpower my originals! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GWO9_WM-B04 Thanks Cian

Like you said "it's happening all again, seen it all before..." brilliant idea for a lyric, albeit very sad. I have a love of Ireland and especially her music, and you are bringing it right up to date with an excellent folk song. Great stuff! Bill

Suppose it is a little sad, although I hoped the song would essentially represent that day of return to the island. Really glad you liked it Bill, thanks for listening. Cian
