Back to the Beatles

I watched a documentary on George Harrison the other day, that was done really well. Since then, I've had my trusty acoustic out and have been running through their catalogue. I can't believe just how good those guys were. I loved them as a 10 year old, and now at 60 the magic is still there. I think that goes to explaining why they were so successful. There stuff had great chord structures and melodies and the vocal harmonies just glue it all together. None of the music was really topical but focused on human emotions that cross age barriers.

We could use those guys today. Hard to believe that they were just having fun and hoping to still be around after a year.

Regards, John

It was the Beatles that brought me to music in the beginning. I went to my irst music store in 65”. I rediscover them every 10 years or so and am amazed each time how wonderful their music was. I think I’ll listen to them on the way home. Thanks John!

Sirus-XM CH 18. Beatles 24/7. Well not 24/7 they do interesting segments. This past week they did a segment on where/how Dylan and The Beatles crossed.

They play the bands/artists that influenced The Beatles. They paly Beatles covers and they have occasional segments by those who were influenced by the lads.

It's a great station.

I wasn't there, but I'm pretty sure that they had no freaking idea that it was future Bapu's 11th birthday so why should I waste valuable brain space remembering that connection.

Actually, you will most likely remember it from now on anyway (that's pretty how the brain works). It's neigh on impossible to force forgetting something once it's learned. Just because you choose not to talk about or verbally acknowledge it does not mean that it's not already filed in your brain space.

Re: Back to the Beatles 2017/10/17 21:12:37 (permalink)
So glad the Beatles never sounded like Wings.  I never liked Wings much (boring) or Paul's music on his own either.  It is not the same as the Beatles music.  The big factor in the Beatle sound was Lennon.  Listen to the music John did between 1970 and 1980 and you will hear more Beatles like music going on there without doubt.

I feel the magic happened when they wrote together.  John pulled the sound away from Paul towards some point in the middle (e.g. the Beatles) and Paul did the same too.

I think we might need Ben to chime in here.  After all he has spent quite a bit of time researching the sound.  And he is quite capable of recreating it too which is damn hard.

No need to be childish about it.

I like and admire The Beatles, I've just tired of hearing them, same goes for Pink Floyd, Bob Dylan, Led Zeppelin and many other 'classic' artists. I like finding new music these days.

The Beatles are the DNA of the popular music you hear now. They influenced so many other bands and artists that it would be impossible to name them all. Lennon & McCartney songs have been covered by just about every major artist in the last 50 years.

For a band with such a short life span they achieved a staggering amount. You can't 'over-rate' that.

I just don't want to listen to them, now..

Kind of moot though? It did happen. They really were at the center (if not damn near the beginning) of changing the notion of popular music and how it was created and presented. They were a force and so many artists who came of age in the 70s, 80s and 90s have declared them their biggest influence. That does not happen because they "weren't that great". But as you somewhat tried to point out, they were great for their time.

Also, "if they came out today" will forever be viewed through the lens of time. For all we know if they arrived today they would be even further on the bleeding edge because they would be 17-20 year olds and would have the undefined history of music to draw upon.
