Backwards sustain pedal

I bought this simple sustain pedal for my keyboard, but there's something I hadn't thought of. The sustain is always on unless I press down the pedal. Surely it should be the other way around, shouldn't it? I want it to work like a regular piano pedal. Who in their right mind would design it this way? Does anyone know how to fix it through, say, the internal settings of the A-PRO keyboard?

It's something to do with how the pedal is connected and keyboard switched on, i think. I can't remember off the top of my head, but i'll check for you...

You should connect the pedal before turning on the keyboard. Also, by default, it should be transmitting on midi CC 64.

What pedal are you using? In the A-PRO manual is says "use only the specified expression pedal (EV-5 or EV-7). By connecting any other expression pedals, you risk causing malfunction and/or damage to the unit."

Hey, thanks for replying so quickly! But actually, it's a sustain pedal. Not an expression pedal. It's not a Roland one, but they don't warn about sustain pedals. It's just so annoying. I don't know why this would happen. I think there is a way to plug it in before the keyboard is turned on or something like that. I'm not really sure.

Some pedals come in different polarities. I found a forum where this problem was posted and some fixes were suggested. It is a Yamaha forum but the tips might also be useful for you.

    From http://www.yamaha-keyboar...-works-in-reverse.html

1: turn off keyboard unplug pedal, then re plug pedal turn on keyboard...Presto should reverse the sustain polarity

2: I also had this problem when I first set up the piano. I discovered that i had the piano powered up when I initially plugged in the cord for the pedals. All I did was turn the piano off, unplugged the pedal cord, waited a few minutes, plugged the pedal cord back in again, then powered up the piano. Problem solved!

3: After working with Yamaha pedals for many years and throwing away about 10 of them, I've found that you can simply change the polarity by holding the pedal down while plugging it in to the back of your keyboard. This has worked for me before and corrected the problem.

as chappel already said it's probably the polarity and some can adjust by when you switch on the keyboard have the pedal pressed down.. otherwise it's sending the signal all the time.. it's basically an on / off switch

depends how old it is also and who  makes it maybe also.. there isn't a small switch somewhere on the unit itself?

I have an m-audio one.. have no probs with it
