Bacterial Meningitis
An update on my Brother-in-Law. We just got the results of the spinal tap. It's bacterial meningitis. Not good. Gotta get some sleep. Everyone is exhausted. Today is his birthday.

Wow I'm sorry to hear that. Bacterial meningitis can be very dangerous, but fortunately most people recover if treated early enough. Hope he pulls through.

Roy is in very bad condition and in ICU.The Doctors asked him questions again this morning and he answered them all. Still going to be a waiting game. I don't know what kind of meds he's on but they will keep him sedated. Thanks for your prayers.

Sorry to hear that Bill. My Father contracted it back in the day and it was a very stressful time, he was touch and go and got transferred to a specialist hospital whilst he was in a coma. Me and my Mother went through all his business affairs one night because we thought he wasn't going to make it and she felt like she needed to take up the slack if need be it was a really harrowing time. When he first went down with it he started acting like a mad man and we knew something was majorly wrong but couldn't get him to go to hospital as he got quite violent, in the end he got really frantic and I had to lay him out with a punch and call the ambulance while he was still out and they could get him sedated. Fortunately after those first few days he turned around quite quickly and made a full recovery. Your brother in law is at least in the best place possible and without the black-eye. My thoughts are sure with you all at this time though and I'm praying that he gets through this. Stay strong buddy your sister needs you right now.

Ok I just did a little reading. Little scary that something like the flu can kick this off. Meningitis infection may show up in a person by a sudden onset of fever, headache, and stiff neck. It will often have other symptoms, such as Nausea Vomiting Increased sensitivity to light (photophobia) Altered mental status (confusion) The symptoms of bacterial meningitis can appear quickly or over several days. Typically they develop within 3-7 days after exposure. It's good he's answering questions. And as Sharke noted it is treatable with a very good success rate. The biggest risk is the very young or very old and still an 85% success rate. Sending good and positive vibes his way. Mike

Yep, my father got spinal meningitis back in the late 50's stemming from a poorly performed ear operation (done by an Army doctor) that tried to resolve a problem in his ear canal that kept him out of the service. The result was he went from managing two bank branches (and he was head of the ABA at one point) to working half-time for Goodwill and losing his driver's license due to the seizures and medications... If that had happened more recently, we would have been living off of the malpractice settlement - oh well...

Yeah the article said you're at greater risk in heavily populated areas like schools and the military. Maybe he picked it up at work if he's in an office building or another place with a fair population. My girlfriend owns hair salons. All these damn people come in with their colds instead of staying home taking meds for a week. Now all her girls are infected. Next year she said that during flu season she's going to inform people and put a sign up that says if you're sick please reschedule. Her shops were damn near shut down because people couldn't wait a week for a hair cut. Mike

Her shops were damn near shut down because people couldn't wait a week for a hair cut. Mike I pick up colds from the gym every year. It's so infuriating - pardon my French but complete and utter douchebags with colds and flu who come to the gym to "sweat it out" (an old wive's tale) are to blame. They're sneezing and coughing all over the locker room, the steam room and the sauna. You should never work out when you're sick, and it's bad manners in the extreme to come to a public place and spread your germs everywhere. When you work out, you're putting your body under a lot of stress and your immune system is temporarily weakened. That's why it's so easy to pick up germs in the gym. Same goes for people who get onto crowded buses and trains coughing and sneezing. Either stay at home, or medicate yourself to the point where your symptoms don't include bombarding everyone around you with snot.

Meningitis usually comes along with a purple rash if I'm not mistaken, and one characteristic of this rash is that it does not fade under pressure. So if you press on the rash with a clear glass and it doesn't fade, this is a sign that you need to get to a hospital fast.

Just got home! His son looked over at him a around 6pm tonight and he motioned him over to say something. He asked, well whispered, how long he'd been in the hospital. Wow! Finally! The Doctor came in and checked him out. He said there doesn't seem to be any lingering side effects from anything. The last thing he said was "How long they gonna keep me in here?" What a relief! He remembers everything before all this happened thank God. My sister is all smiles!!!

Message on facebook to family;
Just left Roy and he's back to his old self!!! He's still a little droggy which reminds me. If y'all come to see him just before breakfast, lunch or supper he'll be asleep and they bring in his food and leave it. I had a great breakfast this morning! All you got to say is"Yeah Roy you ate the WHOLE thing!" Then wait 5 minutes and he'll be back asleep! :-) Uncle Bill
