If it's too quite here at the office, all I have to do (in my best Steve Perry falsetto) is sing "City Of The Angles", just that one opening line, and my supervisor will get up pronto and put a CD or something on to try to get that song out of her head. She can't stand Journey, so I'll throw that out there and BAM she's off to the stereo to get something going to get that damned Journey out of here head.

There, I made it fun again.

Hey, bapu,

LOL, LOL, LOL. I came so close to posting "Sugar Shack" myself. I figured that nobody would know what I was talking about.

I'll never forget hearing that song ad nauseum on AM radio back in the 60's. I *hated* that infernal song with a passion.

What's really strange, though, is that I heard it on the radio some time ago and I found myself actually *liking* the song. It must be that I'm an old buzzard now and ready for the Champagne Music Makers of Lawrence Welk, or something like that. Of all the songs I can think of, Sugar Shack was the one that stuck in my mind as the single most annoying song of all time. ;>) Good call, bapu.

Best regards,
Bill

I have a buddy I play golf with, and whenever he starts getting the best of me, I simply sing "Why do birds, suddenly appear, everytime, you are near?" Within about 3 minutes, he'll begin humming the melody, and his golf game goes bad. I pulled this on him about 4 times, until one day, after the round, I was driving home (counting his money) and he called me on my cell phone, and began calling me every name he could think of for sabotaging his golf game with that &^(%$$% Carpenters song.

Randy

Hi, Randy,

LOL. The Carpenters used to drive me absolutely nuts. I couldn't even stand to hear some of their ultra-pop stuff.

Then, one day one of their songs came on the radio while I was chatting with a musician who I really respect. Of course, when I heard the Carpenters, I physically cringed and made some disparaging remark about them. My friend looked at me kind of funny and said "Have you ever *really* listened to Karen Carpenter's voice?". I admitted that I hadn't but I started to actually listen to her from then on.

And, you know what? I came to realize that she was an incredible singer. She could infuse a melody with the most intense emotion, pathos, and humanity. She had a way of expressing things in an achingly beautiful way. To this day, I still get chills down my spine when I hear certain of the Carpenter's songs. Pretty weird, huh?

That said, "Close To You" is still a hard sell to me due to the bubblegum nature of the tune, itself. ;>)

Best regards,
Bill

I would argue that if a song sticks in your head then at some level you actually like it. It must push some button internally, or touch a nerve somehow or it wouldn't stick.

If I were a songwriter that would be my goal. To write a song people can't forget.

gee that's one I'd put in the "wish I'd written" category... right after Pleasant Valley Sunday.

I'd like to do a cover of Pleasant Valey Sunday combined with Joni Mitchell's Morning Morgantown.

Interesting story. I think Karen Carpenter was one of the greatest ever interpreters and voices. I'd kill to have her sing one of my songs. Interestingly, oddly, Karen at times has a timbre not totally unlike Cher's.

I would argue the same thing, I think. Maybe not that you "like it" but that it is appealing to you on some level. Maybe even involuntary. Triggering something.

I understand that the person who wrote that tune died quite recently.

They spent about 3 hours getting him into his coffin.
