Bad Sound quality. - Need Help

I just reinstalled SONAR 7 Studio Edition on a new laptop. I never had a problem before, but on the new computer all audio that plays out of the software has a very static, echo sound. It sounds like a flanger effect is on all the time, but it is not. It is not the speakers because I have tried headphones and other speakers but the bad quality persists. Also the speakers work fine with itunes and other programs. I have tried everthing I can think of and nothing has worked. If anyone has an idea whats going on please let me know.
Thanks

Are you using the onboard sound card?

Does it have canned effects on it?

Are these being applied to the audio that's coming out of Sonar?

What are your latency / buffer settings in Sonar?

It's probable that the audio drivers in the laptop are not ASIO or WMD, which SONAR does not support.

A dedicated external USB soundcard would be better than the generic laptop card, and you would have stereo mic/line inputs for recording audio as well.

A cheaper alternative (although not as good) is to download the free ASIO4ALL programme and run that until you can purchase an external card.

Sounds like comb filtering due to two audio streams somehow coming out at the same time. What happens if you export a song and play it through Windows Media Player? Is the effect still there? I'm guessing it's not, but if it is that tells you the problem is within SONAR.

What is your driver mode: WDM/KS, ASIO or MME? Try switching to a different mode and see if the problem persists.

All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to.

Yes I am using the onboard sound card on my laptop and it has effects but I don't think there on. I did download ASIO4ALL and that helped. Also I put my latency setting at the far right on the "safe" area and that also helped a lot. I tried play window media player and the effect is not there.
I don't know what my driver mode is...how do I change it?

It's in Options / Audio and then the second tab 'Advanced' has a drop down to select your driver mode.

There's probably a bit of tweaking to be done to get the optimum performance out of the onboard card, you might be better off just getting a half decent USB soundcard and be done with it.

If you want to keep at it with the onboard it sounds like you need to get your latency / disk buffers and driver mode tweaked out.

Playback is about all you will ever get working with an onboard card even once it's tweaked. To record using Sonar you will want to purchase an audio , MIDI interface.
Also while your messing around download and run the dpclat meter and follow instructions.

Stop uising an onboard sound chip, if you really care about sound quality Get a card with good converters and drivers
