Baffled! VST Instrument Problem

Hi Folks,

This is a problem I am struggling to get my head round...

I loaded up Native Instruments B4 to record some organ, when I did there was no sound via the keyboard. However, when I clicked the on-screen keyboard, the sound played fine.  I loaded up some other instruments: True Pianos, Sound Centre, and everything worked perfectly, as it usually does.

Then I loaded a demo version of another hammond organ, and that didnt play either! AND I also got nothing from Vintage Organs via Kontakt, despite the sound via the on-screen keyboard working fine on that too. It seems to hate organs! Haha.

I just loaded up some other Cakewalk instruments once more to check; bass, strings etc - and it all works perfect. For some reason these organs arent picking up the MIDI keyboard or something, I dunno!

Any help on this would be grateful. Ive been at it for two days...

With Kontakt you have to make sure that your midi track is set to the proper midi channel...some vsts actually accept the "none" default.  Also, in X1 the midi channel isn't where it used to be.  Pull down the bottom of your midi track until you see your midi channel indicator and make sure it's set to send on the proper channel.  This might not be your problem but it's solved the exact same thing for me with Kontakt many times.

Where you come from is gone...where you thought you were goin to weren't never there...and where you are ain't no good unless you can get away from it.

Thanks very for that info. This actually did help with Kontakt. Not the others though. But at least I can use an organ till I can fix the rest.

Tried that for the others. No luck yet. Thanks though.

I have this problem all the time.  True, the input echo can mess you up, but sometimes Sonar will not respond to USB keyboards even though they are shown as active devices in Preferences, show up OK in Windows device manager, and work fine with virtual instruments in stand-alone mode (provided Sonar is not open at the same time).

Hi Pretty common problem this - I use an Akai MPK 49 which is very prone to this problem.

Try this - make sure the midi tracks you do not want active are set to input none.
Then before loading Sonar unplug and re-plug your input keyboard.
After starting Sonar make a point of changing the input device on the track you want to activate to your keyboard.

Which make of keyboard are you using by the way?

    Hope this helps

Sometimes, Windows used to kindly turn off some of my USB ports if they weren't used for something like 20 minutes.  I went into Device Manager and went to the 'Power Management' tab for each USB hub and turned off the enabled by default 'Allow Windows to turn off to save power' or something to that effect.

Your problem may be something else entirely, but it's something to probably do in any event.

    Goo luck - Bob B.
