Bananas

Those of you who are over 50: has it ever occurred to you that bananas don't taste as good as they did when you were a kid?

I had assumed it was a symptom of maturing tastes, or dying taste buds. Then in 1992 I started making annual trips to the tropics and got to eat "real" bananas straight from the bush. (No, they're not trees, they're bushes. They get hacked off to the ground after harvesting and a new plant grows from the shoots. The cycle is remarkably quick, too - they're bearing fruit again in just a few weeks.)

Turns out, there is a reason why bananas don't taste as good anymore. And it's not why you think. It's not because they're picked as green rocks for easier transport. We're actually eating an entirely different strain of bananas nowadays. Here's the story...

I went on vacation to Puerto Rico a few years ago and tasted bananas that were better than I could have imagined. Maybe they weren't Cavendish. It was like the time I played a $75,000 Steinway in a local piano store.

I like bananas, so I hope they develop more varieties.

I knew about this. We'll see what they come up with. May have to move to St. Lucia. They have delicious little bananas there. Only problem is...100% of the export crop goes to the U.K.

I recall a small delicious variety of banana when I was in Madeira which I understood was unique to the island.

Interesting - it seems that I never ate a real banana in my life.

That being said, having watched a lot of 70's TV footage recently, I do notice that there is a reason why I can't stand more than 2 minutes of contemporary TV or even very informative videos such as this one. I do miss the more natural debit, the pauses and the dynamics...

I was quite surprised by the size of the seeds when I first ate natural bananas in Thailand. Bananas are about 30% of the size here compared to the uk, much nicer tasting.

Apparently, there are a lot of fruits that have gone "extinct". 95% of the apple varieties that were commercially grown a century ago have disappeared, replaced by patented varieties bred for maximum sugar content but little regard for flavor. Same for most crops.

That's one reason I love gardening, I only grow heirloom everything. Ugly little malformed cusses that taste unbelievable but someone somewhere has saved seeds to everything back to the early founding days and before, still viable.

Unfortunately, a month ago, a supercell formed over my house and the 15 minute hail storm took out every flower and garden plant on the property, all just before harvest (plus my roof, my siding, my downspouts...)

I'm with you on that James......my whole family eats them , but I can't even stand the smell and have to walk away when they're eating (banana's that is...not the family ). I think it's from eating a lot/too much of them in my younger days.

Bananas are really strange to me. I never want to eat them. When I think about eating them, I'd rather eat something else because the banana flavour my mind tells me is just not good. The thought of eating a banana doesn't appeal to me at all... till I actually eat one and then they are amazing.

I just don't understand it! :(

I blame all the fake banana flavoured candy and popsicles I use to eat when I was younger. They were so gross.

There are actually people out there that do a thing called "The Banana Island Diet " ....
When I saw that , I went from eating one banana every so often to eating more than  10 to 20 bananas a day for a while
I didn't loose any weight going there , but I think the potassium boost I got helped offset all the salty jive I had gong on  in my system ....
FWIW ...I did feel pretty good while I was doing it ...Now  I'm down to only eating 5 bananas a day .....
