No kidding. That was to clarify for all of those under the age of 30. Actually, I was on my iPhone so doing the quotes thing, cutting and pasting the "Fab Four" and putting a big plus one was beyond my iPhone skills. quantumeffects, I noticed you now live in MN..what part? I spent my first 25 years in MN and all of my family still lives there. I am actually visiting in St. Paul right now. It's a little cooler than TX, but nice to be back.

Yep, it takes some adjusting. I grew up in Wayzata, staying with my brother in St. Paul. The kids are enjoying the snow. Been doing some sledding, but don't last very long outside. We're here until Friday and then head back to Dallas. The funny thing was that it snowed in Dallas yesterday.

Yea, my kids are in the Wayzata (Y - zeta) school system. Can you say passive aggressive. I know they call it Minnesota nice but I really think it is an American-Scandinavian thing ... a bit different than north Jersey ;-)

Joe Jackson is a tough one to pin down. He went from punk/new wave (Look Sharp. I'm The Man), to big band jazz (Jumpin' Jive), to pop (Night & Day), a symphony and a tribute to Duke Ellington round out the catalogue.

There is company out here that runs something called Rock Camp for Dads, I’ve talked about it before ... great business model. For a very modest price (yes it’s pay to play) they get together a band for a month (with a theme), give you 12 hours of studio rehearsal time and give you a one set gig at one of the local premiere clubs at the end of the month. I’ve done a few of them and they are a lot of fun. I did a “Cult” themed camp a few months ago and I will say without exception The Cult were the LEAST diverse band ever. I wasn’t at all familiar with their music prior to the camp and spent a little more than one month listening to about 9 Cult tunes over and over again every day. I will say that after a month, with the exception of Fire Woman, I couldn’t name the song I was listening to and when we were actually playing them I was having trouble keeping track of the arrangements for the different songs. Their songs just came across as cookie cutter with bits and pieces of Zeppelin and AC/DC mixed in (I ended up using cheat sheets … something that as a general rule I do not do). I am almost too embarrassed to post a video from the gig but I’ve embarrassed myself on these forums so … what the hell, I do have to warn you the skill level of the players is all over the place but my drumming is reasonably solid but you really don’t see me: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AqiUYiuVTYM

Jethro Tull have tried a few styles in their 40 years..started off as a blues band, ditched that for riffy little songs on 'Stand Up', full blown prog on 'Thick as a Brick' and 'Passion Play', then did a detour into English Folk on 'Songs from the Wood' and 'Heavy Horses'. They did one almost entirely electronic/synth album 'Under Wraps', then headed into Dire Straits territory with 'Crest of a Knave' and 'Rock Island', before going all 'world music' on 'Roots to Branches' and 'Dot Com'.

Alice Cooper is a favorite of mine and covered a whole lot of ground. Pretties for You and Easy Action, totally weird. Then the remarkable series of rock album he put out w/ the original band, almost all classics. Then the strange stuff he did post Welcome to Nightmare, like Goes To Hell, Lace and Whiskey, From the Inside and such (all of which I dig for some reason or another, anyway). Flush The Fashion - which I think is a pretty good new wave-ish album. Dada, cool album too. Then the comeback stuff, which was more metal-ish. Still good stuff. Then, Trash which was quite a little gem in its time, though very commercial. Some pretty good songwriting and good performances all over that album.

Zappa, spent quite a bit of time in quite a few different musical styles. There are lots of guys who have two very different careers too: Cat Stevens and Fat boy Slim and Radiohead for example. Herbie Hancock does lots of different stuff too. Brian Eno.

craigb If you want LOTS of diversity, try out Tangerine Dream. Four decades of bunches of styles. And NOBODY understands "digital" and "analog" better than this band! And they have the history to show for it, too ... just take a look at those monsters on the stage in the old days! Only Klaus Schulze, still sets one of those up, and mostly they are equipment that holds his sequencers and such. He also sets up a huge mixing board next to him, and you can see this really well in the DAS RHEINGOLD DVD with Lisa Garrard. He mixes his own live, and does not like anyone else touching it.

Hi, The band with the most diverse catalogue in my collection would be Amon Duul to Amon Duul 2. Stage 1. Coming from a commune, where everyone got stoned several days a week for a music-in and then orgy, for sure, someone taped some of these sessions and released them. When you hear them, they are ... not sure any of us will ever call that music ... it's just folks having some fun, whining, whirling, adding some singing, and some different things, that are not likely to be coreographed. Stage 2. Some folks want to leave and go further with the music. Result Amon Duul 2 and "Phallus Dei". The first piece is a long piece, like the previous improvisations, and it starts out tripping and becomes a party ... and it is almost the same thing as the previous trips, except more focused to make a point ... that all this early stuff was just an excuse to get laid! ... but they were too stoned to know the difference. Stage 3. Massive improvisational era. "Yeti" is the very best guitar solo/lead I have ever had the pleasure to enjoy ... it's non-stop, unafraid ... and confident, and capable ... and it does not repeat itself. "Dance of the Lemmings" is also totally out there, with the most psychedelic lyrics around. Stage 4. Music gets better focused and killed. "Wolf City" is one of the best rock albums ever done. The follow up was almost a copy of the previous album, but after the anthem about the end of the old days and the dope, the band went to just a few commercial pieces of music. "Vive La Trance" does have this anthem (mentioned), and another piece that is ... one of the most memorable and vicious attacks ever, on anything ... check out the brief lyrics on "Mozambique" and then the acid rock assault after it ... and the very subtle bittie after it ... "unite and fight". Stage 5. Very commercial sounding ... but "Hijack" made a point of flipping a finger to that thing, and do something else. The lyrics are still biting and pointed. "Explode Like a Star" ... is really strong ... "please make up your mind before I make it up for you ... "and is about drugs. It ends with a satirical song about putting the devil on TV ... which The Firesign Theater had already done, but not in song. MAGMA --- is ... an acquired taste and not for everyone. The mix of what appears to be jazz, Carl Orff and Rock, and whatever else you want to call those vocals and its own language, is strange, and nice at the same time, but they have done this for 40 some years, and some of their catalogue is absolutely insane and amazing at the same time. AND, it was one of the most satisfying concerts I have ever seen in my life ... everyone here on this board can do the ABC's ... I wanna see ons of them step right up in the middle of this ... I don't think it is going to happen ... and the music folks create here is mostly the same as all other music, and not as vastly different as this one can be. Amon Duul still takes the cake!
