Bands that should have been more than they were

I guess I would define this as:
A band with a killer album
That never lived up to it again
And faded into the sunset

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zc3KXwd8ZWQ

The Knack

Yeah - I know - they recorded a few other albums.  But Get the Knack was one serious collection of well crafted pop songs - My Sharonna - Good Girls Don't - Frustrated - Siamese Twin... it was about my favorite album that came out in 79.  None of the other recordings were close (IMO).

They were more than a one-hit wonder.

A Way distant second but
Lunatic Fringe - Red Rocker http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sTFVMMCwsss
Sort of a Floydish sound almost.

Re:Bands that should have been more than they were 2011/08/31 19:19:36 (permalink)
    Hi,

    On to the topic ...

Boston ... fantastic first album and the 2nd one could not possibly live up to it. Very sad, because that first album is excellent.

Iron Butterfly ... even today that first album does not sound bad ... but the following albums were strictly one cut albums.

Janis Joplin and Big Brother ... Cheap Thrills is one of the best rock albums ever recorded, but after that ... it was Janis the famous person and the music was not as good, and them ol' kozmic blues was not that enjoyable of an album compared to the bombastic nature and far out-ness of the first one.  And that long cut taught more guitar slingers how to be loud and hard, than Robert Fripp, Eric Clpaton, Jimmy Page, or Jeff Beck, or anyone else every had the ability to do or go! Mr. Gurley, I know you have left us, but we owe you a bow and a thank you!

Brainticket - Cottonwood Hill was a psychotic and insane album. After that it became a sort of concept something or other, and then ... who knows?

White Noise - Electric Storm in Hell. Insane album that ends with Bapu's least favorite song that he has never heard ... "Here Come The Fleas" ... and of course, the 2nd album is totally bizarre ... who knows?

    M. Frog - Excellent fun album with him and Todd even screaming several FU's while playing around with the knobs on the synthesizers, a talent that has not been taught to the Coffee House Band yet! There is also a fun song in there that Mooch doesn't like that is called "There's a Frog in my Tub" ... that defies description and direction. M. Frog's 2nd album was not worth the vinyl it was printed on!

Charlie - Fantasy Girls. Band from LA had a fabulous first album and a hit later off their 3rd or 4th album, but the nice rock punch and ability of the first album was replaced by slick bullpucky and the outstanding drumming by one Steve Gadd was lost ... and supposedly that is not the same Steve Gadd ... hard to believe ... because the drumming is very similar and well defined like that one Steve Gadd!

King Crimson - In the Court of the Crimson King. After such an imaginative album and amazing "voice" for a whole generation, the next album was almost a copy of the first one. And the rest of the band was not that interesting either, though some albums are nice. Many bands have nice albums!

PFM - As their fame got bigger, their albums went down hill. The first two albums are still their very best.

I just got the 3 DVD thing with all the Secret Policeman's Balls ... and bullocks ... and yeah ... there are some funny bits in there!

Somehow, I now look at the Coffee House (the band too!) as that Philosophy Discussion between philosophers ... but I want to request a few more couches for us all potatoes!
I was also going to add the LP by the GTO's as very fine and funny ... but they never had a 2nd album ... and those comments are fun to place in any music that we make as long as you do it backwards and upside down, so the effect is more mesmerizing and fun.
