Bapu - fancy joining King Crimson?

This from Tony Levin might put you off...

''Some of my friends in the audience thought tonight’s show was even better than last nights, and maybe it was.
But there was one train wreck. And a Crimson train wreck is, well, not like other bands… a King Crimson train ...wreck takes out the whole train station. And maybe the town it’s in!
Allow me to explain.
It happed during “The ConstruKction of Light”, a particularly complex piece. I’ve mentioned in a few interviews that to me, Trey Gunn’s touch guitar part on that piece is the best I know of, for utilizing what the instrument can do, and complementing the music in a unique way.
But it’s really tricky… took me ages to learn, and even now that I’ve got it down, things can go wrong at any point.
And tonight, things indeed went wrong. It’s hard to say where it began… hard, not because I don’t know, but because I know it was because of me!
Only a little error… pausing four beats instead of six. (there are various pauses of both lengths in the piece.) But in this piece, we’re not all playing in the same time signature, so the two guitarists, hearing me enter early, didn’t know when to enter with their parts… opted instead to let me keep going on my own.
And I did keep going. The drums are out in that section, so it was just me, playing on and on in a complex eighth note pattern, hoping someone would come in. That lasted for ages (to me) and finally the drummers and I came together with the 15/8 figure that signals the end of what could be called the verse.
But then, a new issue.. would the guitars enter with verse two, or, not having played anything yet, start in on verse one. Alas, they didn’t agree on that. They came in with both, hence in different keys! The ensuing harmonic mess left them no choice but to stop again, leaving… you guessed it, just me playing alone again.
By now, we certainly knew we had a problem about how to bring this piece together. There’s no just counting ‘one two three four’ when one player’s in 28/8 and others in 7/4 offset a quarter note from each other, and the drummers waiting to join in in 15/8 to signal finally getting beyond the verses!
I could have just stopped and admitted defeat (maybe thrown up my hands and shouted “Thank You” in a Spinal Tap maneuver.) But, right or wrong, (well, wrong or wrong) I persisted.''

It really is amazing to hear such complex music perfectly executed day in and day out. Mistakes are the exception with today's musicians.  In classical guitar, I ve only ever heard one or two mistakes by the touring types over 20 years.  Jazzers on the other hand can be very sloppy.🤗

Hi,

The only thing that is weird, to me, is that the majority of the audience, has absolutely no idea what he is talking about, and that they could continue playing around with the piece, and we might even think that they were working on something new.

From a rehearsal perspective the thing here to do is NOT to stop, which Tony didn't, because that is usually the dead giveaway.

No worries, KC will be ready next time, and I bet they will intentionally mess up on this same spot, because they found something to fool around with ... fun times!

Music is not about notes and chords! My poem is not about the computer or monitor or letters! It's about how I was able to translate it from my insides!

I'd never be in a band where they'd have me as a member.

But I could start a tribute band call Queen Chartreuse. I'll play all the parts. As bad as that description.

Pedro will love it.

Rule #1: If he tells you to stop, don't stop.

In order, then, to discover the limit of deepest tones, it is necessary not only to produce very violent agitations in the air but to give these the form of simple pendular vibrations. - Hermann von Helmholtz, predicting the role of the electric bassist in 1877.

Of all the things I write, they tend to be a bit on the theatrical/film side of things ... thus, any thing I would do would likely not be on the rock'n'roll side of things, but on the VISUAL side of the story of things, and poems. The closest and best things I can think of that really live in my vision, are The Doors and Kate Bush ... to give you an idea.

So to think that an "error" would be a problem, it wouldn't ... it would actually give you/I a new bit and piece that we might eventually find fun to play with and come up with something else.

What I have been doing lately is playing with "sound" and adding poetry and "lyrics" that fit the sequence of sounds, and/or music. This is not "new" at all, but it is an illustration of the sounds, and conversely the sounds are an illustration of the music, since the words would not be there without it, as the "moment" can not be duplicated ... and it will be different the next time ... which, yeah, of course Bapu and all you guys ... would have to be tempered and cleaned up for performance. I'm not an idiot and as a "director" for film and theater, there is a need for something ... and for me, the idea of "pre-conceiving" it ... at times, interferes with the continuity of the material right in front of you, and this is where a lot of music for me loses its appeal ... it creates chord changes to change the mood, and instead it kills it ... it's "mental music" ... and it's not intuitive and free flowing like your mind and mine are.

I don't claim to be original, but things do happen in performance, and with a director, you can work on somethings that help everyone come together again, instead of hearing Tony think that they whole thing got really messed up ... and reminds me of Ozric Tentacles here in Portland, who ignored my suggestion to ensure that their keyboards were setup correctly through the sound board, and sure enough twice, they died during the show, and Ed had to "conduct" the drummer to a stop ... because it was all half dead and gone. Those moments really sukk!!! Not much you can do ... sort of like there is a power failure!

But, I would never, EVER, get on stage to try and be a Mick, or Bono, or someone else ... plain and simple, and sadly, that is ALL you guys can think about?

The day I hear....let's say, 30 seconds...of music from you, that's when I'll start considering what you have to say.

Until then, it's just (too many) words on a forum, as it has been for the last 10 years.

Um. If you don't claim to be original, then you are in fact trying to be someone else.

You're either doing more or less the same thing as someone else or you aren't.

IOW, you're behaving just like everyone else here who isn't in a tribute band.
