I don't remember why I have ears 

I can play by ear but I find it easier to use my fingers.

I only play by hear, but AM not always in gear
The tracks start of sounding good and near
and they somehow end up in the rear
Either way, these tracks always sound much better with beer

One thing about playing live, it's hard to take back the merchandise upon non-payment.

I disagree. You would need to spend more time with the RIO folks in Europe and the experimental groups in the 1970's, 1980's and 1990's to appreciate what I am saying ... because the "finger" is only given by Anglo-American audiences that kiss up to a commercial top ten because they have no ear for anything else in the world, except what they are told is "music" and "prep'd" for you to hear and consume!
 
If you are afraid of the finger, you are in the wrong business, is what I remember from the ones that really "made it" in terms of literature and music ... of which I am familiar with. The "finger" is your best friend ... it means you are in the right path! Think of it as ... at least someone noticed, and one day they will buy it and pay me for it!
