Baritone Sax Recording

I am having difficulty recording myself on Baritone Saxophone using Home Studio 7 and a Samson Meteor Mic.  I max out the recording level very easily.  I have increased the decibel level in Sonar, I have reduced the input level of the Mic, the sound card, the software to almost nothing as well as placing the Mic any where from 12 inches to 2 feet away from the saxophone.

I am not looking to find out how I sound to the audience as of yet.  I am looking to get a recording of me playing that will not blow out my speakers when I increase my playing about a mezzo-piano.

Any one got any ideas?

Thank you.

I suppose the only solution is to move farther away from the mic.
FYI, the volume knobs in the tracks are for output only; you can't control the input in SONAR at all. That's up to the audio interface.

Are you doing this on a laptop? If yes, are you sure you're recording through the Samson and not the PC mic? (Also, what do you mean you increased the decibel level in Sonar?)

USB microphones are not the best choice. Try a different microphone.

I am beginning to wonder if this program is worth it.  I have tried to get  a hold of the people here at Cakewalk to no avail.  The liars at the music store that I bought this program from, the recording engineers I have talked to, and the countless musicians I have asked have all said that Home Studio was a good program, but I cannot get this pile of crap to work at all.

I will not recommend this or any of the "fine" products offered here to my students, to fellow musicians, to anyone with in ear shot.

This is a lousy program and it is not doing the one thing I need:  namely to record myself playing my instrument.

I wish I could get my money back.  I AM DONE!

Well, for one thing, you made a poor selection for a microphone. USB mics don't work well with music programs and will only work in MME mode which is not the best. I'd like to help, but you will need to provide more info. What soundcard are you using? The one built into the computer is not going to give very good results. What are you using for monitoring your sound? Computer speakers won't be able to handle the frequencies put out by a bari sax. Where are you placing the microphone? Saxes are generally recorded by the finger holes, not in the bell. We need more information and you'll need to be a little more patient. Anything worthwhile takes time to learn.

Check the Windows Mixer (the little speaker in the system tray). Click on the device and on the levels tab, adjust it so that the mic doesn't overdrive the input. Its probably something as simple as that.

Right. And it's the sound card/audio interface or microphone that sends the signal. SONAR only records what is sent to it and if that signal is not right, SONAR will record that not right signal.

Here's my problem with this.  I have repeated told all the information you have requested to everyone from the flunky who sold me this piece of crap software to guys who have recorded groups like Cheap Trick, the Chicago Symphony, and the musicians who have recorded groups at venues like the Jazz Showcase.  Every one of these people tell me that this software and the microphone should do what I want it to do.  I am not looking for a professional, CD quality sound.  I am looking for SOUND WITHOUT DISTORTION.

I am using the computer sound card.  I do not know what it is.  I have the computer hooked up to a 200 watt stereo system.  I have placed the mic any where from six inches away from the bell of the saxophone to 12 feet from the saxophone and I get the same result:  I max out the program at a mezzo piano dynamic.

Oddly enough I had zero problems with Audacity and this sound card and microphone on this computer.  I should have quit while I was ahead and not bothered with buying this piece of crap software but I figured I should get into the real world.

About being patient Mr. Daveny5, how long would you have tried this before you gave up?  Two weeks?  Two months?  I bought this software in May 2011 and have problems with it.  I have emailed this company, talked to everyone I can think of and even sat with sound guys at concerts to pick their brains to get this to work.

Cakewalk can forget about me recommending this or any product in the future.

It's not the software, it's the hardware, regardless of how well the hardware worked in another program. SONAR has nothing to do with how the signal gets to it. It only records what gets to it.
    Have you tried another mic?

Well, it works for 99% of other people so I guess you're in the 1% that can't figure it out. Its your loss. I think your attitude is a big part of your problem. I've been using Cakewalk products since the late 1980s and they've always worked for me.

If it works with Audacity, it should work with Sonar so its probably a setting you have in Sonar. Go to Options-Audio-Advanced and set the driver mode to WDM and then go to the General tab and run the Wave Profiler. That may solve your issue.

I don't know why you bought Home Studio 7 (which is an older version) in May since X1 Essential has been the current low-end version of X1 line since last year.
