Bass players / builders/ modifiers? Help... :)
Hello there. This question will probably not fit all of you, but I'll have a go (please, do send me in a correct direction if I'm totally off here... :D ) In my home project studio, I have an old bass guitar. I'm a guitar player myself, but try to play a note or two on the bass :) The bass is really, really not good sounding. I think it is from the 70s, maybe early 80s. It ok to play - but I think of changing the microphones. They are though somewhat "not standard".... Anyone have an idea of what I can put in instead of these pickups? Ideal would be a set of Jazz Bass pickups, but I suppose it will not fit? For the more interested of you, the brand of the old hag is ES-S

almost looks like a knock-off of a fender bronco or the like.... it's hard to suggest upgrades on an instrument that just might not be worth it. and it all boils down, to how important you hold your bass tracks. if you're serious about recording, then upgrade. but if not: good passive pickups, would be my first suggestion. that, and a complete re-wire with new pots to match. other than that, it's all about setup. nut, bridge, intonation, truss rod, all the basics. then move to hardware upgrades... i mean, you could upgrade the bridge (millions of options out there, i like Leo Quan badass, and Hipshot, Schaller), the tuners, and beyond that, the neck and body. me, i'd sell it, and build a nice quality kit.

I would suggest you to take it to a local luthier and tell him what you think the problem is and ask his advice or get him to work on it.

Thanks, good suggestions both of you :) I wouldnt pay 399$ for a upgrade/new build - Especially since you probably can get a used mexico/japan Jazz Bass pickup set and electronics for "a buckle and nothing" (do you actually say that, or is it just my poor English? )

You guys have completely rebuilt my bass in a few links :D Good find for the pickups, Batsbrew! I've googled all day - but was not able to find anything in the same dimension. That bridge is also very, very similar as the one on the bass.

That kit is cool. $400 for the kit.... of course you have to assemble and finish it. A nice oil stain and poly would be sweet. It retails for over $800 finished. It is also a Carvin which is a fine quality instrument. Much better than a Mexican/Chinese Fender copy IMHO. If I was in the market for a bass that would be the one I would want to get. My only serious question would be does it come in an "Am" version?

My only serious question would be does it come in an "Am" version? I also like the set, if I priority the money for it I'd go for it as that (you also have to bear in mind the we in Europe probably have to add 100-150$ for shipping...) But there is sooooo much to be bought out there. VS-700, other guitars, new POD HD, Sonos systems, new LED tv (or serveral) How can you then priority a bass, which I can't even play? I'd really want a oiled, natural body as well. (Yes, I'm mainly speaking about the bass. Or whatever....) About your serious question: I have already bought a set the "Am" bass strings. They were very expensive - but they had a "bapu©" sign? I suppose this means it's legitimate? Or have I bought pirateware? I hope not - Norway has some of the hardest penalties for pirategoods, and we stop every shipment which is coming from "out there"

Since I only have 58 posts (not 34thousand, nine hundred and whatever ) I'm not into all that shortening stuff. (LSHBCOMN) What my googling have gotten myself so far, is here. Is this you? If yes: how did you manage to get that "hollow sound" of the microphone? Do you use X1 or Sonar 8.5 to get that?

For the more interested of you, the brand of the old hag is ES-S If the instrument is not warped and feels ok to play, then it is probably worth keeping. Before you start replacing any parts, I suggest trying some heavier gauge strings first. This will produce more output fom the pickups and will allow you to adjust the pickups to be further away from the strings to give a more consistent sound. If it still sounds poor, then consider replacing the pickups or following some of the above suggestions by Batsbrew or Beagle.

Well, a 1993 model (made in Mexico) Fender Jazz Bass pickguard, with included PU's and electronic found its way down my post box this weekend. A enormus sum, a whole 30$, changed its owner due to this. (this was not included the shipping from the US though) A Jazzbass pickguard was actually perfect for the bass - mm fit all the way! The only thing I had to do was to make the pickups fit - this was done in a not so nice way... And, both pickups had the 3.60" neck size, I dont know if this is how it is supposed to be but it sounds really much better now. I did a small recording before/after and the before recording does not have any treble at all.

Well, the postman did come with a new package a day here. 1998 model Fender Jazz Bass Deluxe, 4 string. Black with "brownish" pickguard. Made in mexico. Actually, just like this one. My pickups does not have any text on it, I suppose that have changed since 1998? :) Sounds amazing, havent figured out the active controls just yet (seems like it is a well hidden thing, not even mentioned on the Fender site... Now I got to learn how to play that bass!

The hollow sound in the vid was from using a cheap mic in a room where the music was probably being picked up as well creating some phasing issues. In other words.. poor recording techniques. Nope.. it's not anyone from here in that video, although, he could probably fit right in over at the Coffee House.....
