Battery 3 MIDI out to trigger Maschine pad LEDs?
- I load Battery 3 as a soft synth with MIDI out enabled (track 1).
- Then I insert a MIDI track (track 2), call it "Battery triggers Maschine LEDs".
- Because I have chosen 'enable MIDI out', Battery shows up in the Input of MIDI track 2.
- And so, I choose Battery as Input (Omni) and Maschine controler OUT in the output of track 2.
- Then I record a slick beat in track 1, MIDI shows up in track 1, and in loop mode all's fine.
I hoped that the triggered cells in Battery - though the recorded MIDI notes in track 1 - generate the played MIDI notes out of Battery to track 2 where they fire off the LEDS in Maschine. This is wished for, because in loop recording mode the visual feedback is helpfull when recording in the original recording track 1 on the fly. Yes, I know, I can copy and paste the whole clip to track 2, play, and then they fire off, but C/P is not fast workflow, after each small added (or deleted) note I have to C/P the clip to track 2. This is not wished for. Does anyone knows this is even possible in Sonar X1? I have seen examples that it is possible in Ableton Live (through Live's extreme flexible routing). Any comment and suggestion is welcome.

Some thoughts ... 1 - Choose "Maschine" - NOT "Maschine Controller" and make sure you're not in CONTROLLER mode (ie, be in normal mode on Maschine). 2- double check that battery3 is actually sending out MIDI data 3- Are the battery 3 triggers mapped to the sounds/pads in Maschine properly?

Billy, thanks for replying. A little misunderstanding here, due to my failure in being more specific. Note that I use Maschine specifically as a MIDI controller in this case, for recording Battery cells in Sonar's track 1. That works awesome, because I have the Maschine templates for Battery tweaked for 64 cells (pad layers A through D (switching with the Groups button on Maschine) so that a lot of cells can be triggered on the fly. The sensitivity of the Maschine pads in extreme mode (Soft3) makes it comparable to KORG's Padkontrol is my "educated" guess, and that has a supreme effect on the more sophisticated samples inside Battery (especially those cells with multiple samples that respond to velocity). However, when I click on a Battery cell for instance, MIDI is sent out, and the pad lights up. But this is due to the fact that I have enabled Maschine as input and output in the Audio & Preferences option in Battery (done in stand alone mode, because that is not possible inside Sonar) and also not applicable here. So, the question remains, using Battery or any other VSTi that is MIDI Out Enabled insidwe SONAR, if it is possible to internally route the played MIDI notes to another track (like the Auto monitoring functionality in Ableton Live).

I'm still a little confused, I think, as to what exactly you're trying to do .. but: Live has a bunch of routing functions you won't find in Sonar. But Sonar also has some strong routing available if you know how to do it, so to speak. So you want to route "played MIDI notes" to a track OTHER than the source MIDI track, is that what you're saying?

Hi Billy and others, OK, I have two MIDI tracks. In one track I record Battery sounds (through my Maschine MIDI controller) in a clip, and loop it. I have a drummap and the MIDI notes are nicely placed inside the drummap. If I play the looped clip, Battery cells light up of course and all's well. Battery is a VSTi enabled as MIDI out. In that case in de 2nd MIDI track I can choose Battery as input. My view/hope is that if the clip in the recorded track 1 is playing, the MIDI notes trigger Battery to play the sound and light up the cellls in Battery and, because Battery is enabled as MIDI out, sends the MIDI note information back to (now) track 2 because track has Battery as an input. This would allow a 2nd recording of the same MIDI notes in this 2nd track when record is on but without touching any MIDI input device. The MIDI notes should then instantly copied to the 2nd track. Why do I want this? Well, say for instance that I have the Maschine controller as the output in this 2nd track, then the MIDI information lights up my Maschine pads for visual feedback, without the hassle of copying the recorded MIDI clip in the 1st track to the 2nd track. This becomes even more important if I want to change notes during live recording, I only have to change the original recording track (nr. 1), and MIDI events are looped back to track 2 for (in this case) visual pad feedback. More applications can be thought of. My knowledge of SONAR is growing, and I thought that SONAR is a state-of-the-art MIDI DAW (it is for some serious professional studio work), yet I am afraid that the flexible routing I am talking about is not possible. But still, I have hope. Perhaps you or someone else can come up with "of course that's possible, you should do this and this", or "Sorry, but that's not possible in this version of SONAR, but they are working on it ... :-]". Cheers

Perhaps you or someone else can come up with "of course that's possible, you should do this and this", or "Sorry, but that's not possible in this version of SONAR, but they are working on it ... :-]". Cheers Your approach seems doable. I suspect there are few areas that might be clogging things up: 1- The PADS on Maschine need to be mapped to the Battery3 cells or visa versa. This can be done via the right-click option in a group "Sounds to MIDI" setup. You can't light up a Maschine pad if it's not mapped to the incoming data. If you're not familiar with the Sounds to MIDI options, you should review it in the Maschine manual and especially the 1.6.x update addendum. 2- Make sure you're not in "MIDI CONTROL" mode in Maschine; ie., be in standard instrument mode. If none of that has any change/effect for you, let me know. I'm almost curious to try this myself ;) I have no need to jump through those hoops just to get some pads to light up, but I can understand why you and others might (especially for live purposes as you mention). My approach would be to use Maschine directly with its MIDI OUT to Battery3 - OR - via the new VST functions in Maschine since version 1.6, use Maschine with Battery3 as a VST within Maschine. But the routing should work as you laid it out - unless I'm missing something obvious. One thing I would test if I get time is whether Battery3 *actually* does MIDI OUT. Just because it can be enabled in Sonar doesn't guarantee it's working right in the VST itself.

Billy, thanks for the suggestions. I have this itchy feeling that your last sentence is the crux here. For instance, Battery does not have this MIDI in/out indicator, like NI's The Mouth effect. With The Mouth the mentioned procedure actually works. So, perhaps I should add a feature wish on NI's forum for Battery, but hey, it's not a gamebreaker either and there's much for me to explore. Good luck with your music projects.
