Be Honest
Do you make ugly faces when you sing or do the Joe Crocker "doo doo" fingers. Lol. If so doesn't help performance. Just asking. If it works I might try. Hahahaha

No Joe Cocker fingers (because of the bass in my hands). Just the face.

It does make a difference. I used to think it was an affectation, but I've found, even in my limited singing experience, that these sorts of contortions and movements do actually help. I guess some of it is just helping to get your chest/throat into the right configuration, I dunno. The moving hands or arms definitely help me to keep the flow and meter while singing, sort of conducting yourself as you sing.

There were times when I was producing a vocalist who could not let go of thinking too hard about the melody. She was all over the place because she was thinking too hard. So I asked her to move her arms around at random to take her mind off singing and it worked. She already had the song and feeling in her heart but until she was distracted, she couldn't deliver it well. Thanks for reminding me of that! Rimshot

Depends on what type of music whether you get the finger or the face contortions or if doing any of that type of music in the first place. Otherwise it is all conductor type symphony type performances.

Most of my ugly faces occur after the vocal tracking when I listen to the playback.... But yeah.... I think I do make faces (as you call it) when I sing.... at least it feels that way.

I used to stand on one leg to hit the high notes. Now, I play the guitar and sing, so I am pretty stationary. I tend to close my eyes, but am trying to learn to make eye contact with the audience more.

My face gets a little contorted when I sing, usually looking somewhat angry and I tend to want to close my eyes and I fight that impulse for sake of the show. I find (from looking all the pictures) I make the most messed up faces playing drums though. Most of my life I have been playing guitar and singing. With this band if I am singing lead I have to hand the guitar over to somebody else when we switch and I had a hard time getting used to it. I felt kinda wierd behind just a mic stand. (a little off topic but...) I never wanted to be just a lead singer as my experiance has embeded this stigma for that slot in a band.... almost every "front man" I have worked with that didn't play an instrument too suffered from what I call LSD (lead singers disease) where they seem to have an ego the size of an elephant and actually bring themselves to believe that they are the "real talent" in the band..... They (in my humble opinion) are a step above a good kareoke singer and are basically playing live band kareoke so the super huge ego's always turned me off. No offense to any singers intended, this is just my spin on the many doushy singers I have encountered.

I'm working on vocals today. I'm going to try the arm flailing and scrunch face thingy. But I won't plan it out.

I heard that the reason behind Joe Cocker's odd arm/hand gestures was due to him playing "air" piano. He played piano and probably worked out a lot of the material sitting at the piano singing and playing. When he was up front with just a mic, the hands just kept on playing.

Rimshot I don't look so hot trying to hit high notes out of my range. I have, however worked with artists that needs some performance help with lack of expression while signing. Rimshot This means you're possibly straining to hit those high notes. I have just begun singing lessons again and in only two lessons, have learned to hit the highest of my range (which has already increased by at least 3 semi-tones in two weeks - up to a B4) without straining at all. Your mouth and face needs to stay relaxed during the whole process. When I used to hit high notes, my face would contort super ugly as I'd try and hit the notes. It seemed to help. But once I have learned to activate my muscles more appropriately, everything is changing! It's all about tilting your larynx - or so I've been told so far. So I would suggest a few lessons from a great teacher could be really beneficial for you!

I wouldn't say I make weird faces.... But I find that my hands are usually "twirling the notes" in the air. That's a little odd. :)

Mick Jagger does it. Stevie Nicks does it, too. It's quite natural for hands to participate. Much more practical than, say, dancing. For me, my hands are usually employed as headphone clamps so no invisible-orchestra conducting is possible. However, I'm most comfortable playing the piano or organ while singing, even if the keyboard isn't being recorded.

That's interesting Philip? I'm a singer, and a pretty good one? But I can't sing with my eyes open in public? Even in a small setting? I can't explain it? But it seems like you understand.

It's easy to turn into Ray Charles and slam your head into the mic or pop shielf, definitely. But.... gotta take the mic technique seriously though. If you are serious about recording it like it should sound, you should be able to control your distant to/angle from the mic just as you control your picking technique to manage tone and volume. It's tough, but gotta do it.
