Be My Friend....Free cover (Updated Mix 12-31)

Hi all, I hope everyone is having a great christmas! This is a new cover song I am working on, its not finished yet but I'm having a hard time dialing in the vocals to sit in the mix properly. I know this is a very subjective thing that varies from person to person as what "properly" actually is. I'm aiming for a vocal that is not really IN YOUR FACE but not burried either. I think I'm pretty close but I would appreciate some fresh ears to take a listen and give there first impressions and suggestions. The song is on my soundclick page bmf test. Thanks
Richard

What you have sounds excellent so far, the backing is spot on and has a nice 'live' 3 dimensional space to it.

I'd be inclined to move the guitar slightly more to the left and the vox more central and bring them up vox some (3db?). One of the beauties of doing Free stuff is it was always a very simple 'as it comes' sound, the two Paul's supplying any colour with their soulful playing and singing.

    This is sounding pretty faithful.

Ah, Free - one of my favourite bands, and absolutely my favourite rock singer. A lot to take on, but you've done an excellent job here. I agree with Jon's assessment, the guitar is a little too central and the vocal sounds a little off to the right. Fine vocal, very authentic, right down to the 'huh!'

Thanks again guys for the feedback. Variaxman god bless you dude!!!Lol!!! to have my name mentioned in the same breath as paul rodgers is beyond belief. (and trust me I have no illusions as to my vocal abilities or gifts........but I thank you for the super kind words of encouragement) I remixed this again and took some of the mud out, this song is becoming a bit of a mix ginny pig as my last tune was. I have really been bitten by the engineering bug lately and am damn determined to find that radio friendly modern mix aproach (not that I like it per se, but thats whats popular right now) I would like to have that ability in my mixing skill arsenal to maybe help out local musicians with there songs once my skills have matured. (hopefully this will happen within the next decade lol!!!!)

I like the vocals back in this mix. It adds to the plaintive nature of the lyrics. FWIW, Drums are too loud.

    Free :-)

BMF actually caught my eye. The company I work for, that's what we call our POPs (Point Of Presence). Internet sites.

I can't believe how well you captured a Paul Rogers vibe here. He is my favorite rock vocalist "of all time". Nice mix, nice recording, but like my last date said? It ended way too soon...

    Drums are too loud.
Thank you for that . I was kind of thinking the same thing but wasn't sure. are the vocals too up front right now to you?

    I think it f'ing rocks...

    --------------------------

Ok, I went back and re-listened, and yes, the drums are a bit up front, but I was filtering it through a Free/Bad Company/Paul Rogers prisim. If they come down, not much, just a weence :-)

Hi all, I pulled the drums back in this as suggested and tried to take some mud out of the overall mix. Hope I did more good than bad. any oberservations on the new mix would be appreciated.

Okay, just listened on computer speakers:

Since I don't recall ever hearing the original, I have no frame of reference, but here goes:

Drums sound in better balance, though still too up front. The bright piano in the intro is distracting a bit. I would tone it a bit darker if I could.

One nit is that the guitar could use some compression, and a slight lowered volume (ducking) when the vocal is going. I had problems deciding which to listen to.

('bmf test' is all I listened to today)

Note: most mixing engineers I've read consistently/professionally have a vocals-up version (+1 dcb) and a vocals-down (-1 dcb) version in addition to the main version ... and a TV-version (voxless).

This one seems vocals-up ... to me ... especially toward 2 minutes or so. They seem to get a dcb louder! I'd consider to small-room-reverb the vox back in these spots ... since its thick and crystal clear enough already. Just a consideration.

In your face vocals may suit this style ... but I doubt for the whole song. Methinks, many sensitive women are into soft male vocals (where they have to strain to listen). Some men don't get into love songs ... "Baby babe" etc. So, I'd personally focus on the guitar tones, their transients, their special fx's, etc. Sorry this disagrees with the others (my disclaimer may be glanced upon)

Hey this is coming along nicely.

Simon Kirke used to clobber his kit with chair-legs and was always mixed fairly high to suit his plain and economic style so I reckon the kit is about right in fact I think the cymbals are too quiet. I'd still like to hear a bit more on the vox though particularly over the guits.

But this is rocking and taking me right back there.
