Beach Boys Cover (Solo Acoustic)
Hey guys - I played this at a friends wedding a year ago. For his one year anniversary I am recording it and going give it to him as a anniversary present. I am looking for advice on the mix and/or background strings. I have a nice acoustic (Taylor) but a crappy mic (Shure SM58 and Sterling ST31) and crappy sounding room. I have the worst time trying to get a good acoustic recording despite having read countless articles on micing acoustics and so forth. I am also plagued by loud fret noise (especially since I added a ton of verb). I used the Cake multiband compressor and tried to compress the fretnoise frequencies that jumped out too high. I'm a beach boys fan from my early childhood... God only knows what I'd do without you... Really a great song. It's a very interesting take without the vocals. I enjoyed it. Nice playing.

Thanks Robby. I cant take credit for the arrangement as I borrowed it from someone I saw on YouTube, Brian something. He didnt have as much fret noise as me :(

Nice tune, Mike. You're welcome to come over and record it in my not so crappy room with my not so crappy mics. I think we can even alleviate the string squeaks a little too.

Scotty - Vermont really isnt that far from Ct. Matter of fact, i just ate some flat bread pizza in the "Vermont" house at the BigE. Thanks for the offer, hopefully we can collaberate again some day. On the issue of fret noise, the only way I can see to get rid of fret noise..is by having a decent guitar player play it instead lol
Mike - Thanks for the listen, I hope to bring the "moment" back to my friend and his wife with this recording,.. hope it works. I actually have 4 other acoustic Beach Boy tunes that I performed for them at the wedding and promised to record them -someday- for them. ...good thing I said "someday" Heck if they stay married 4 more years I can get the one for each anniversary!

Yea one of the best songs written ever, well acording to Rolling Stone but it is a beautiful tune, would have loved the vocals as well.
I wouldn't worry about fret noise, christ it's an acoustic guitar, it's suppose to have fret noise, my only advice is to back off on the verb slighty or eq it properly, it sounds a bit too fake.
Don't worry about equipment either, I use to but I have wrote some of my best tunes and recorded them with only a Behringer 90$ preamp and a 150$ microphone it's knowing how to include the noises that people might think of as a bad recording is the key and the majik, I always say its the song **** the technians!!!

Ben - Thanks for the listen and thoughts. I assure you, you would not of "loved the vocals as well" had you heard me sing :). The verb I used it Spaces, I went back and forth on the amount, your probably right I should cut it back.

Long time no listen/post here and this is the first one I hear and I picked a good one. Beautifully played- great articulation. I wouldn't change a thing, other than the fade out. Love the fret noises. Great job Anthony

Its always a pleasure to hear an instramental version of a Brian Wilson tune, because its easier to hear how much sublime melodic and harmonic content his songs have.
(The last two times I've seen Bill Frissel, he's encored with a solo guitar version of 'Surfer Girl' which brought the house down and sent shivers up my spine.)
Your version of 'God Only Knows' demonstrates this wonderful tune well with a warm guitar tone that fits the mood perfectly. My only crit is that the synth part is not as good as the guitar part.
Enjoyed it.

You said it, there are several chordal moves in the beach boys songs I totally love. In Kokomo the classic IV major to iv minor (FMaj - Fm) is a favorite. Also a similiar move in Surfer Girl, DMaj7-D7-Am/D to -GMaj-Gm. I love that chord progression!
Their harmonies were also fantastic. I played Surfer Girl on a solo acoustic arrangement for my friends wedding, the bride wanted that while she walked down the 'aisle' (which was really a stretch of beach) it was really cool.

I love this. The fret noise doesn't bother me at all. Love the strings too, although I wouldn't mind more of them.

I like this a lot. I've not recored an acoustic so I wouldn't know how to help other than a finger exercise that will help imensly with picking your fingers up just a bit as well as chord changes. I did this for warm-ups during my classical days. I still do them from time to time. PM me if you would like them. Put "finger switching" in the subject.
