Beats and bars
I am kinda gettin confused by posts upstairs. It seems a number of people are refering to a bar as a beat. Like "copy the beat 8 times" If its 4/4 does that mean you end up with 2 bars? Maybe this is the difference between Beats and Beatz??

Neb, that makes perfect sense to me, it always has done. My question was rhetorical. It just that for some seem to use beat when they mean bar.

So 7/8 could be a real show stopper. Well we test for a driving permit...no tests to post on a forum so nothing surprises me...especially "confusion". So.....for those that may be...the top number is how many beats in a bar or measure and the bottom number is what type of note = a beat. It will take more than confusion to ever change that.

First time I saw somebody post that they wanted to "make some beatz" I was thinking ..... OK, so go get a drum and a stick or pair... I'm still confused at times what people mean when they ask certain things. One of my pet peeves is people using the wrong terminology when trying to describe something. I understand that new folks might not have a firm grasp on the proper words, and I'm probably guilty of using the wrong terminology myself many times. "when I plug the wire into the red thing and then click the thing on the screen I git no sound.....wassup wit dat?"

As I understand it, in my befuddled middle-aged way, 'beatz' are self contained loops featuring drums, bass and some instruments (usually synths or orchestral type stabs) which can be repeated and used as the basis of yer 'hip hop' type songs. See a guy called 'boominbeatz' on the songs forum, he's always asking for opinions on 'em.

It's the watering down of musical knowledge basically. Now that's perfectly OK to me if the use of new technology brings creative tools to creative people and they produce quality music. Where I have the problem is when the wrong terms are used in ignorance and totally confuse other newcomers. Its difficult to know how to fix this as the saying goes 'you don't know what you dont know' To me, a measure and a bar are interchangeable terms, although I prefer to use the term measure. Each measure is a separate repetition of the meter which is most often a subdivision of note lengths over 4 beats i.e 3/4, 4/4, 5/4, 6/4 but not always. 'Beats' in modern music parlance also means something entirely different. I think it is unfortunate that this term was adopted as this appears to be where the confusion arises, a more 'street' name might have been better and caused less confusion...

Early on in my Cakewalk experience, I remember asking in the MC forum, 'what are all these beats things everyone seems to be trying to sell me on souncdclick'? I mean, a beat is a rhythmic hit of some percussion instrument, right? I already had plenty of those, a virtual inexhaustible supply. All it took was a hit of a keyboard key or a click of the mouse. Found out "beats" are loops of varying length that you can copy and paste in your piece to make it a Top 40 hit. According to the beats makers.

Neb But copying the beat 8 times, could be ... bad ... because if this was ... 3/4 or 11/32 ... go ahead ... it would be more fun seeing the result than anything! In fact, it would be downright glorious to see someone break the monotony. Hehehe! I wonder how much this is an issue with these DAW's trying to re-invent the music notation and information by using terms that do not have anything to do with the music itself and confusing the issues badly. I swear, to you that this one guy that gave a lecture at Portland Music on Ableton, more than likely did not know music at all ... not an iota of music ... but he sureknew his code and bruhaha in the DAW for which you don't have to know music, because you can setup a metronome to do it for you ... and when you are bored with this pace, you change it to something else!
