Beats headphones... commercial REALLY??

I saw a BEATS headphones on TV yesterday that was, IMO, appalling. There was a black guy whom I did not recognize. A rapper I assume, maybe an athelete. He got out of his ride and proceeded to walk between two fences holding back waving an yelling fans whom he completely ignored. An female security officer rolled her eyes after he walked by (that was the highlight of the commercial). After he had passed by and completely ignored all his fans (without whom he would NOT be a star of any kind), the caption on the screen read "hear only what you want to hear" BEATS by Dr. Dre

I thought it was really offensive and a sad commentary on modern society. I am constantly amazed at people who would be unknown and probably unemployed without their fans, especially actors who make a living pretending to be someone else, who diss their fans and reporters who act as a middle man between the "star" and the fan... Alec Baldwin comes to mind.
I know they must get aggrivated but they sought the fame and fortune, they wanted the money and without the fans they wouldn't have it. Then they act as if they are an island. It is insulting.

I call them McBeats because like the Big Mac... it is just advertising that makes people want them, not the quality of the product.
Disclaimer: I am making a few assumptions about the phones, I have not tried them I just assume from the advertising that they are EQed for Hip Hop. In any case the TV ad was offensive. Maybe I am just out of touch.

That's Keven Garnett, and he's a pro athlete. If you read the signs the fans are holding, they are of a derogatory nature. They are his opponents fans. That's why the headphones come in handy.

I love emily. The beats headphones are actually pretty good. Overpriced because of the celebrity name attached, but very well made. I think if one stripped the labeling, the average person would rate them favorably. I find that most negative comments about them are more of a reflection of a person's attitude towards hip-hop. I listened to some jazz and classical through a pair and was pleasantly surprized at how it handled various situations. I still would not buy them because of price but they are not bad at all.

    IMHO...

Beats headphones are god-awful sounding.  I had a pair given to me and gave them away.

If someone gave me a pair I'd hang on to them to double check mixes on. I mean if that's what people are using these days might as well make sure your stuff will translate well to them. I have a pair of headphones that came with my padKontrol (guess the guy was trying to undercut the other amazon sellers by throwing in some free crap... I got a generic expression pedal which I can use for a kick sample and for some bizarre reason some lint free cloths which I use to clean my glasses and stuff... still weird) and they seem to have that low end boost for hip hop. I use them for most of my internet listening because they sound alright (not great) and keeps me from getting my good ones all sweaty and greasy BUT they also seem to be quite good for hearing nasty stuff in my mix that the Sennheisers kind of gloss over. Like these things will start booming out well before the Senns and if the mix is muddy these will make that stand out far more. Pretty useful just like how I use my two sets of crummy laptop speakers for pretty much the same reasons. I also have a big bag of other headphones and earbuds I've acquired over the years that I should really drag out and toss into my process.

I find it weird that the good headphones seem to hide problems to my ears as I work but after one of the other sources tells me something is wrong I can go back to the good set and all of a sudden the bad sounds stand out.

As far as celebrities and crummy commercials... well this is why I don't own a TV. 20 minutes of commercials an hour crammed in amongst heavily censored drivel is not my idea of quality entertainment. Thank goodness for the internet.

Then remind me never to borrow those headphones
(since they are the ones that are all sweaty and greasy).

I would never do that to you, Ed. I'm mostly french and even though I'm a relatively clean fellow there is a lot of oozing from the pores. I'm constantly having to clean my glasses so I can't imagine what gets absorbed into the headphone pads.

If you cooked me up I'd probably taste like roast duck.

A better alternative IMO for those type of headphones are either the Sol Republic or JVC.  Both are less and sound better.  i don't think the Dre headphones sound terrible.  They just don't sound like what i would expect for $200.
