Beautiful Girls with Vocals (Van Halen Cover) Updated 5/7/14

Here is an updated version of Beautiful Girls cover with suggested updates added.   The first version I posted was the instrumental track only, no vocals, the version before included vocals but required some additional changes.   This version includes vocals by Robby.  Robby did all the lead and backing vocals, I used Melodyne to match his harmonies to the VH harmony sound in few spots but otherwise these are the original vocal tracks without any correction.   I think he did a really good job all around including the DLR screams and sound effects.

Beautiful Girls Update - Newest Version
http://www.soundclick.com/player/single_player.cfm?songid=12778731&q=hi&newref=1

Changes to this version include adding lower-mid to guitar and bass, pulling back guitar reverb, pulling back guitar volume, increasing tom volume, increasing the "kiss" sound at the end and a few other tweaks.

Beautiful Girls with Vocals -Last Version (Removed)

I made several changes to the previously posted backing tracking based on input from a number of forum members.  Very much appreciated that feedback.  The changes made to the new version above includes EQ'ing the guitar to have a bit more lower-mid presence, adding some more reverb to the guitar, pulled the bass back a bit and added a bump at 100Hz.  I left the old backing track posted on SoundClick so you could hear the differences.   It is here:

Old Backing track post: (Removed)

Thanks everyone for the comments on the backing track I posted because the suggested changes really brought this to life for the vocals to work.   Additional comments welcome.

Regards

You guys did a great job on this! Very close to the feel of the original song, which is hard to do.

I'm sure Mark will still be able to play (and mix) like this for years to come. I fear that my ability to do tribute versions to Mr. Lee Roth may not last much longer. It's not easy to do. I love it? But it gets harder and harder. I like the melodic stuff, harmonies, Eagles :-)

Great job guys!  I listened to the instrumental track the other day and thought is was good but adding the vocals really made it shine.  It is pretty crazy how close this sounds to the original.  Wow!

Sounds great guys! Good job all the way around. Vocals are great ,instrumentation is great! My only suggestion would be that maybe there is just a touch too much reverb on the guitar but I guess it comes down to taste , not a technical issue.

:-) it is my "distinct" pleasure to be able to record w/Mr. Markno999,,, U all know that I am certifiable? However, please don't judge Mark w/the same measurement stick... I am a crazy MF'er... I know this about me? You know this about me... I'm a nice guy? But a little bit crazy... I accept this. Mark however, on the other hand? Seems to be completely sane? So the fact that we can collaborate, and create something pretty good? Is pretty cool :-)

I thank God for Mark... He is the f'ing man...

This is a great job, Mark & Robbie!  I might bring the distorted guitar down just a hair except during the solos, but I'm sure it's probably true to the original this way since Eddie was always "up front"

Robbie - nice DLR work on this.  you're a versatile vocalist!

Excellent job on this guys!! Robbie & Mark the vocals (+backup vocals), and guitar work is really good. I'm a huge VH fan and totally enjoyed this. Like others have said, I also thought there was a bit too much verb on the guitar, but that was only noticieable by itself.....with the other instruments, it seemed to fit ok. The "brown sound" was very close to the original and nicely done as well. Loved it all 3x....

    Really good job fellas!!

Leadfoot - Thanks for the listen.   Appreciate that you noticed the feel, it is not easy with MIDI drums and these rhythms.

SteveC - Thanks for the comment.  Appreciate it.

Dan - Thanks, glad you like the bass, have played guitar for years but never really dabbled much with the bass.   It is a whole different beast.

CreatingNoise - Thanks for the listen.  The vocals really did make it shine, I have to admit.   Still working on an update.   I think the lower mids of both guitar and bass are lacking a bit on this version so currently working on an update I hope to post in the next day or two.   Spent a lot of time on the BGV mixing to get those just right.

Teego - Thanks, appreciate the comment.   I agree on the guitar reverb, I have reduced the reverb on the guitar along with the changes mentioned in the response above.   Very simple instrumentation on this song but the details with effects and EQ are quite challenging, for me at least;)

Beagle - Appreciate the comment, pulled back the guitar a bit on the updated version.

Mesh - Thank you.   Pulled back the verb on the guitar and a few other updates on the new version.

Gtrpastor -  Appreciate the listen.  Glad you liked it.

    Rimshot - Appreciate the comment.

Posting an updated version at the top.   Made a number of changes including pulling back the guitar verb, increasing the lower-mid's on the Guitar and Bass, turned the toms up, and a few other little tweaks here and there.  Leaving the old version links for the time being.  Thanks for the feedback.

Thanks Teeg's I agree, sounds better. Mark is someone who will listen dozens/hundreds of times, he will take input/crits, he will make small changes, listen again, A/B it, listen again... He has the patience of a saint in this regard... I am more impulsive? (NOOOOOOO!) Which is probably why we make a good team :-)

Shame on me supposedly I'm not familiar with the original but this sounds very well although I don't hear the kick drum as I should?
Any ways a nice song - I liked it.
