Nice tune, Reece, and good performances all the way around.  I'm not quite so sold on the mix though.  Drums seemed a bit loud, and the mix overall felt a bit hot (maybe too much compression or limiting?).

Have to agree with Phil the mix is coming over very hot here and I am hearing some distortion too.  Sorry Reece time push those fader down and start again.

Good song!  Just to back the prior comments, it may be a sign of aggressive compression when the wave-form drawing on SoundCloud rides a ridge the whole time.  Or maybe not -- probably best to trust your ears in any case.

Reece, this sounds Awesome to my ears! You have an AWESOME Voice! I have heard people try and sing in that type of tone and almost all of the time they lose their timbre, but you never do. It's something only the very gifted or very talented ones can do. Excellent vocals! I really liked the song, and the music sounded great also.

BUT : I am no mix master,  but I have to disagree with the others saying it's too hot of a MIX. They are probably right and I am probably wrong. But here is why : "The lead guitar has very little tone in the mix, it's buried, you should raise the treble on the EQ on the lead guitar and bring it out first giving it more clarity and then remix.

I'm just trying to help Reece, so please don't take it any other way, you have helped me over the years many many times with so many questions I have asked and tolerated my frustration. Thank you!

But : My comment on your song and mix has nothing to do with you helping me, it's just me and my honest opinion.

Always great to hear you sing man, you are gifted!

Thank you everyone for the comments on performances, I had a lot of fun playing on this song.

I agree with you Serious Noize!, this was a great vocal performance by Reece.  I especially like when he just kind of lets loose on this song toward the end.

Re: "Beautiful" by Scandalous Grace 2016/07/01 13:44:27 (permalink)
It's pretty good as is! I like the instruments, the arrangement, and the vocal performance.

So, here's some ideas FWIW!
the lead vocal seems pretty dry, and while it's still pretty good, I think it would shine a bit more if you either double tracked it (mixing in the double a little lower in volume, and compressed nicely to boot)  OR slap a tiny bit of chorus/microshift/reverb on it.

Speaking of slap, the drums I think are the only instrument that have that slapback reverb going on, and that makes them to my ears sound like they are in a separate space from the other performers.

I think also you have panned the guitars pretty hard R and L ? You might try them tucked in a little more.

cool tune, have fun with it!

For me this is a much better mix, the vocals are excellent, is it my furry ear filters or is the lead now a little stifled or perhaps over compressed, it did not leap out at me like it did before.

Good job generally chaps.

Re: "Beautiful" by Scandalous Grace 2016/07/04 15:27:08 (permalink)
never heard the old mix but this sounds pretty good. i've not heard your voice for several years Reece but wow! it is much more of a rock/pop singer now rather than a choir tenor!
drums are nice and clear as is the bass but overall i think the mix could stand a little more low-down oomph.
at the start i wouldn't pan each lead so hard as it sounds a bit weird on headphones when one changes to the other.
Bv are perfect and the tune itself is memorable. superb!

Re: "Beautiful" by Scandalous Grace 2016/07/06 10:14:46 (permalink)
John - (Wookiee) - thank you sir! I will check on the low end!  any time you mess with the limiter/compressor on the master you have a good possibility of completely changing the way other pieces sound or interact.  I often have to tweak most tracks after changing anything on the master.  thanks - I'll check on that bottom!

fergusbobb - thanks very much for taking the time to listen and comment!  I'll pass on the compliments on the guitar work to the two guitarists!

Mark (mgh) - hey man!  thanks so much for the great words about my vocals!  yeah, it's been a while!  hope to hear some stuff of yours - do you have something here on the songs forum?  I'll go searching and see.

I'll check out the bottom end - like I told wookiee, whenever you mess with the limiter on the master, it can easily screw with anything and everything in the mix!

on the guitars - Mike had mentioned narrowing the panning on the intro guitars as well and I argued with him saying I thought it was good since they are two different guitarists and are on two parts of the "stage" but I'm talking with them again and I'll reconsider it!  thanks

WOW! I really like this new Mix, sounds great! I couldn't help but finger pick along with this, and realized what a great job of songwriting this is along with a great performance. Your vocals really set this whole song off in a great way. I really enjoyed hearing this a second time and then some.

Reece,

Had listened to the previous version, this one is much better.   Sounds really good on the low end, good punch.  Might be a little build-up on the Lower mids between the guitar and bass.   Otherwise, really good.

Regards

Just listened to what I guess is the latest version...   overall the mix sounds pretty good! Though I'd like to hear those solos "pop" just a little more.  Maybe centered?   Anyhow... nicely written song with good use of a single word (if that makes sense), and the vocals sound really good.
