Been having some lag issues lately.

Hey guys,
So recently Cakewalk Sonar 8.5 is kind of slowing down. I notice I get a lot of dropouts and stuff, which really didn't occur until recent. No new VSTs or new settings. I have done a complete system restore, and installed only essential programs, and it still seems a little slow. Is it time for new hardware?

I still have 151gbs free in my HD, so I know it's not that. Even a defragment is pointless as it does nothing (it even does it stupid fast).

I've been using cakewalk since guitar tracks, then I upgraded to sonar, and when the updates came out, I've been updating up until 8.5. I love it, but the amount of clipping going on in my guitar tracks, constant freezing and crashing, and quality just seems sub par to pro tools for me. I'm thinking about switching, but wanted to know if you guys think I should just up my hardware. I've had this computer for a long time. When I bought it, this was pretty much the best system available, now it's pretty basic it seems, haha.

Should I get more RAM, or just a new PC. I love XP, and hate windows vista, 7 and 8. I do not want to use those OS's. And no MAC either.

    Ah, perhaps drivers are doing that and you should check for any BIOS updates or drivers updates (for your audio/interface).
     
    I don't know what would slow down a computer except a virus or something on your computer that does not belong there and that should be checked out and there are websites about that. XP is going to April 2014 and then Microsoft is not updating it anymore after that. It will be done then (although you could still use it.)
     
    Only thing with newer computers is that you probably do not get a disk (DVD) with Windows 7 on it, you make your own perhaps, and any Restore Disk for Recovery of the OS. Windows 7 also has a backup program and all of that included with it.
     
    Computer are faster now and PCIe slots are Generation 3 instead of Generation 2 or even Generation 1 for like a graphics card and of course the processors (CPU of the computer) also follows with Generation 2 or Generation 3 faster processors. My computer is still only a Generation 2 Intel I3 computer and all of that stuff except for a couple of USB 3 ports which I probably won't be using anyway, since my audio/interface is USB 2 and runs fine.
     
    There is more I can do with Windows 7 for the configuration starting up Windows then I ever could with XP though.
