I've owned a 3rd Hand Capo for around 15 or 20 years now. I don't really use it much though. But you can definately do some things with one that you couldn't possibly do any other way. You can put more than one on your axe too and play between them. Add alternate tunings atop it all and you can see the potential. There are other companies besides 3rd Hand that have made capos capable of only holding down certain sellect strings too but none of them seem to have caught on like I thought they once would. I don't know why.

he's probably cut out sections of the capo so the 6th and (2nd or 3rd... can't tell from the video) aren't actually fretted. i brutalized a shubb capo for drop-d (sixth string or first string flipped) but i've never played behind the capo. some friends of mine have cut notches out of their kysers, which he is using.

he's got good fingers for that - i could never flex mine to get behind the capo (impossible to fret an 'e' in drop d otherwise).

Actually, I'm pretty sure Willy's using a partial capo. I know Shubb makes one that can cover any 2-3 consecutive strings, although it looks like he's using a different brand. On his song "Angry Words", for example, he puts the partial capo over the 3,4,5 strings on the second fret with a standard tuning. He uses some crazy tunings on some of his songs, combined with some creative use of the partial capo.

Willy is amazing. That video is good, but doesn't do him justice. If you ever get a chance to see him live, do NOT hesitate. Great showman, sneaky-good vocalist, excellent songwriter, really funny guy, and absolutely SICK chops. He can leave a room dumbfounded with just him and his guitar.

Kyser makes a "short cut" capo. It frets the 3,4,5 strings and leaves 1,2, and 6 open. I play it all the time. Very "simple" to play, and gives a very full tone by leaving the low e string open. It saves me from having to alternate tune my guitar all the time. I'm really bad in that I'll combine two capos at the same time and play in other keys.

Pretty tough fingering on both sides of the capo, looks easy when he does it.

    1973 "A" neck.

    I'd rather be playing Bass:

i do that on a couple songs i've written with a drop-d capo. the only thing i worry about is the capos reducing the resonation of the guitar with all the clamping, but in my recording space that's the least of my worries.
