"Behind the Glass"

http://www.amazon.com/Behind-Glass-Record-Producers-Softcover/dp/0879306149/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1272913796&sr=1-1

I've had this book for a while and I'm on my 3rd time reading it - I seem to focus on different things each time. Although most of the interviews are old (there's a lot of talk about analog, ADATs, etc) it's very interesting to read about their different approaches to recording, mixing, equipment, working with artists, etc. It definitely reinforces that there are no rules! So many times the answers from one producer completely contradict the answers from another - but they are all successful and get results so they've found what works for them!

Anyway, I would highly recommend this book not for specific technical advice, but for perspective and getting the wheels turning for new ideas.

+1 for this book dlogan. I could not agree more. Not only is 'Behind the Glass' a great book and definately worthy of several reads but equally good is 'Behind the Glass II' which is a second volume packed full of more interviews.

And although dlogan is right in saying it is not full of technical stuff it is full of techniques and some very good ideas and approaches to recording many types of instruments. There is also a lot of great stuff as to what the producers role really is and how to coax great performances from the talent.
