Behringer FCB1010 anyone?

Hi all,

Does anyone have any experience of using the Behringer FCB1010 MIDI foot controller? It looks like a tasty piece of kit that would allow me to control my various amp sims a bit more like 'the real thing'.

Behringer Description

I'm using Amplitube and Guitar Rig on P8.3, Win XP 64, through an M-Audio ProjectMix IO.

I'd be interested to hear if anyone has any experience of this product with Sonar for a similar purpose to mine.

Cheers!

EDIT - I've just managed to get the search function to work (was hanging earlier on) and have noticed that there are quite a few earlier posts on the subject. I'd still appreciate any views on using it with 8.3 though!

I use but only for simple patch changes on hardware. Others use it in more exotic ways. You can also change the chip to get more out of it

You might also want to look at the Roland FC300 - extremely flexible, a bit more expansion capability right out of the box. I use mine to control a live rig consisting of a Vox Tonelab, a Digitech GNX3, Roland VG8 and GR33. I've got an extra expression pedal and 4 switches attached thru it.

    It's deep, but very capable....

I use one for hands-free patch changes on the fly. It is also nice because it has two programable foot pedals. Built like a tank and works great for what I do.

For me it was overkill as I just needed (and still want) a simple usb volume/wah pedal...maybe a program change button. Also, unless you get some help at one of the FCB1010 forums (Yahoo's is good) it's fairly cryptic to program. That said, it works as advertised and is reasonably priced. They go for cheap on Ebay.

The FCB1010 is probably the most exploited midi pedal out there, its user base is really quite large.

It is a bit of a challenge to figure out its midi/patch/channel surfing programming "dance" but there are several programs that allow you to write all the parameters via your computer and simply send them over midi or store them for recall.

Guitar Rig presets, GTR presets, Amplitube Presets, loop presets...

Check out is user site here...there are other "non-official user sites as well...

That being said I don't use it with Sonar, primarily use it live.

I'm using SOnar Platinium on a 6 core Lynx Audio machine and a ton of vintage pre-amps/eq's/comps I build for fun and sometimes money, REDD.47/API/Neve I also use the UAD stuff, and also use a Macbook Logic 9 through Apogee...

Whether or not you go for the Uno firmware upgrade, it's almost essential to have an editor for the FCB-1010. This one [PC Editor for FCB1010] isn't pretty, but it's freeware, and can get the job done.

You can look at all the parameter settings at a glance, then build and send/receive configurations from dead simple to extremely complex. That said, it still isn't a bad idea to get a handle on the convoluted, manual Behringer process. Just in case you ever get 'stuck'.

You can create some very unusual setups with the FCB-1010 features. Some can extend the parameter set of the device being targeted. For example, I have a set of templates for controlling a Digitech Whammy4 pedal. They make it very easy to sequence/transpose with pitch shifting; confined to discrete intervals of scales.

Thanks to everyone for their replies - I may check out the Roland as well. To be honest all I'm after is a patch change footswitch and an expression pedal.

I don't mind a bit of fiddling to get everything working (lets face it, sometimes its almost as enjoyable as sequencing!) it would also give me an excuse to really get my head wrapped around MIDI, SysEx etc. once and for all!

I've just had a thought - I have a Roland GR-20 which I don't really use as my love affair with MIDI guitar ended a while back(!), could this be coerced into sending MIDI control messages for expression and footswitch?
