azslow3,  I did the steps above and while I was in sonar control surfaces I deleted the control surface that I had in there last night.  last night the key board worked and I could use a rapture session and make nice noises... if you know what I mean.
tonight my sliders and pan knobs are working but the rapture session only works as a stand alone app with the keyboard, I can't use it as an instrument in sonar.
spooky to me, probably simple to you.
any idea what I blew up here?  :)

Usual "checklist":
a) does your project routed correctly? If you put some MIDI clip on the track and press "Play", does rapture produce sound? If no, that is routing problem, not keyboard.
b) is "Echo" enabled for the track?
c) is corresponding port enabled in Sonar MIDI preferences? "Mackie Control" use different ports from keys, that is how it can continue to work.
d) can you select corresponding MIDI input instead of "Omni" in the instrument track?
e) does it start to work when you remove surface plug-in from the list?
