Behringer U-CONTROL UCA202

Has anybody ever used one of these?

Behringer U-CONTROL UCA202

I'm trying to deal with the Quicktime takeover of audio drivers issue, which is keeping me from using MOV video files in SONAR on my laptop. When I'm not doing a mission critical session, I prefer to use the onboard card with ASIO4ALL driver, since it takes far less time to set up and leaves me with fewer cables/cards hanging off the side of the laptop. [This may sound lazy, but when you spend months of your life on the road in a hotel room, having to connect & reconnect and be tied down by extra cables & such running all over, it adds up.] Unfortunately, since this is the only audio card in the system, Quicktime takes control of the ASIO4ALL driver as soon as a MOV video is loaded, and SONAR freezes.

As soon as I attach the FF400, everything works fine. But that requires:

1) My CardBus FW adaptor
2) Firewire cable (thick and stiff)
3) FF400
4) FF400 P/S & cables
5) Hauling all of the above with me on the plane in a Pelican case that takes up 1/4 of my total luggage space.

So I'm looking for a cheaper/smaller/easier solution. But maybe that's just stupid and I should buck up and use the posh, luxurious RME unit that I already have.

    Hi, Mike,
you DO realize that the UCA 202 is a 16bit device only, right?

I've never used it, but I've emailed Behringer on behalf of someone else to help him troubleshoot it. have you tried using the ASIO drivers available from Behringer instead of the ASIO4ALL? I don't know that QT won't take control of that as well, but it seems like a good possibility to try.

Actually, I haven't purchased it yet. So I haven't tried ANY drivers with that unit.

I'm using ASIO4ALL on my built-in SoundMAX card on this T41p.

Yes, I realize it's 16-bit only; but then I'm just monitoring through cheap ear-buds to compose & do some really basic edits while on the road. Ideally I'd be at home to work with my big DAW all the time; but right now I'm traveling a lot to perform. I don't want to lose my 'DAW chops' or get out of practice composing, so I'm trying to get this laptop rig to the point where I can do basic orchestral scores to lightweight videos. That way I can keep in shape and just jump back in full-bore when I get home (usually for 4 or 5 days before leaving again). I'm mainly using GPO, TruePianos, Wusikstation v4 & the SONAR 7 plugin instrument suite. My big libraries (EWQL Symphonic Choirs, Kontakt 2, etc.) are too big and CPU-heavy for the laptop. This box doesn't have to be a dream-rig -- just stable. If I can use SONAR, Vegas, Blender, etc. even a little bit on a daily basis while I'm on the road, then I can get the heavy work done when I'm at home with the quad-core DAW.

Right now this little QuickTime issue is the main thing holding me back.

Ok, makes sense, but do you have to use the ASIO4ALL? I would think that the ASIO drivers for the UCA202 would work fine and probably wouldn't cause a problem with QT since they're written specifically for the UCA series hardware.

No, actually if I purchased the Behringer I would probably try it's custom ASIO drivers first. The goal here is to provide a "sacrificial lamb" audio card for QuickTime, so that SONAR has its own independent interface. If the Behringer ASIO drivers work OK with SONAR, then I'll just let Windows have the SoundMAX to itself.

But I would probably leave the ASIO4ALL drivers installed on the SoundMAX so that I always have an ASIO card present. It's a simplicity thing -- if I don't have to plug in a bunch of stuff for a given task, then I won't.
