Behringer X-Touch working in Sonar Platinum
After doing some research into the Behringer X-Touch and comparing it to Mackey Pro I decided to go with the X-Touch. I also shared some PMs with Matt Finley who gave me his advice. It came in yesterday and after spending 4 hrs reading the very informative manual , okay it's 3 pages of sparse to none as far as installation information. That said, the installation was fairly quick and thanks to posts by Matt Finley, Azslow3, and Blackwave I was able to get it up and running fairly quickly. I've programmed the function keys for my personal workflow and almost all the buttons have useful functions. I've modified my desk set by removing the small MIDI keyboard (shown in my avatar), put the X-Touch where my computer keybard was and put the keyboard on the top slide out shelve. Previously I used the VS100 as the control surface and used it , the computer keyboard, and the mouse to do editing in Sonar. Now almost everything (with a little help from the mouse) can be done with the X-Touch! Bottom line is the X-Touch has far exceeded my expectations in functionality and expect that it will greatly speed up my workflow (okay, hobbyflow) . Walt

You're welcome! When I was looking at the controllers I was also looking for positive posts myself. BTW, the reason I didn't go with the Mackey Pro is essentially they both perform the same function, but the X-Touch is about 45% cheaper and more importantly the Pro has a much larger footprint such that it would not fit on my desk the way I wanted to set it up. Wally, thanks for posting the info on the X touch. I want to get one in the coming months, so it is very helpful to have an X touch working with Splat. Happy Holidays to you and yours.

Very cool Walt. I downsized from a Tascam FW-1884 to the Presonus FaderPort. That's an even smaller footprint than the X-Touch. The FaderPort works identical in all my DAW apps (SONAR, Reaper, Studio One 3 and MixBus3). Yeah I have less buttons but for now they do what I want. Maybe I will upgrade to an X-Touch one day.

Will do! I want to use if for awhile, and then will post findings. i.e. some people on other forums have complained that the master fader doesn't function. Easily fixed in the Sonar Menu. Walt

I plan to get one of these for use with Sonar X3. I don't have Platnum. Recently, I just lost my eyesight, and I've been working with azslow3 to help me with a solution. Told me the X-Touch would be a nice addition and could be worked with, so I'm hoping it'd be worth it. I just don't havew the funds to get the Mackie.

I replaced my BCF 2000 with the X-touch a couple of weeks ago. I'm impressed with the unit but unimpressed with the lack of documentation. If it weren't for this forum and Sweetwater I'd still be trying to get it configured for Mackie mode and setup in Sonar Platinum.

Did you try removing, and re-adding it as a control surface? Also, did you try a different USB cable or port? Also, Try switching to Midi mode, then back to Mackie mode to see if that may help. I know, it sounds silly, but you'd be surprised just how often the simplest solutions can be the answer. I do hope this helps.

Did you turn the unit on before launching Sonar? You should try that. Sometimes Sonar doesn't pick up hardware that is turned on after the program launches.

I love my X Touch. I wish there was more documentation. I want to route the expression pedal to somewhere besides the master fader. For those who lose connection, go into SPLAT preferences and make sure the X-Touch is recognized.

I have returned the Behringer XTouch after a few weeks. The faders are terribly loud. How can someone mix music while this dot-matrix printer makes noise? If someone searches a very quiet and flat controller with 8 faders (and needs no transport section and masterfader) I recommend to take a look for the Avid Artist Mix. http://www.avid.com/DE/products/Artist-MixIt works very well with SONAR and Windows 10.

My X-Touch faders were as loud as a needle printer, when 8 fader move simultaneously. I have read in some forums that other users had the same problem. Maybe Behringer installs different faders or has made a revision. Previously I had the Cakewalk VS-700C that was loud as well - but quieter than the X-Touch. And the mackie control is also loud. The fact is: The Avid artist mix is not quiet - the faders are mostly inaudible. I'm no fan of AVID - I only wanted to have an absolute inaudible controller with SONAR.

My Mackie MCU has motorized faders and yes they are not quite but here's the thing, By the time I am ready to mix a song the fader noise is not going to bother me because I've already done all the paper work. My motorized faders are turned off. I automate by hand using Automation lanes and nodes, exc. When I am doing automation, my faders are turned off. So I don't have to hear the chatter. The only time I use the faders are during the recording process. I find that during mixing a mouse and keyboard is much more precise than a fader is. but when I have an instrument in one hand... that's when the faders come in to play and become essential.

@chuckebaby I have done the same as you, and mostly automated by hand. I also turned the faders off by hearing to the mix - and used the faders during recording. But then I have asked myself, why do I mostly automate by hand? - And why do I have motorized faders when I always turn them off? My Roland VS700C was outdated and just to big - and so it was time to look for a a small flat controller which is absolute inaudible. I first bought the X-Touch, and then I bought the Avid. Now the Avid-faders are always on, because I don't hear them.

THAM, I can respect that. I understand where you are coming form. Maybe some of my work habits are a form of my hardware and environment. It is entirely possible that if my faders were not as loud as they are I might leave them on at all times. My first reason for turning them off was of a maintenance value. I have heard stories of others complaining of burned out motors on their faders. So I figured, hand automation is just as easy, but maybe it isn't. This has lead me to possibly explore using the faders with automation. I do like being precise with automation and a fader is a little difficult to be "dead nuts" without the entity of some slope/gradual fade. But maybe there is another way, im going to dive in to it. Good response.

@chuckebaby At the moment I do both. First I do the rough mix with motorfaders and then I adjust smaller values and special fades from hand. I've first seen automation with a 24-track-tape and a automation-mixer for a half million dollar in the 80's in the studio from Horst Jankowski (german jazz pianist). At home I had only a self-made mixer and a 4-track-tape (Teac 3440).

I have a X-Touch Compact that I bought new a few months ago. It has that "dot-matrix printer" noise on the faders. It is noticeable at quiet monitoring levels, but most of the time it doesn't bother me, and if it does, I just shut off the motorized faders after I'm done automating (or move the faders to the next bank with less automation). Mind you, most rapid automation I do tends to be done with clip gain and only final mix gentle rides are done with fader volume automation. Once the X-Touch Compact was up and running in Sonar, it has been running completely stable, even through a few Windows 10 updates.

First, you need to add the Extender as a MackieControl XT within the Control Surfaces in preferences. Then you need to select Mackie Control from the Utilities menu, and click "Configure Layout". If your extender is to the left of your X Touch, rotate the first v-pot on your main X-Touch one click to the right and click the "Click here when finished" button. This sets the extender to channels 1-8, and the main x-touch to 9 - 16. If your extender is to the right of your X Touch, rotate the first v-pot on your Extender one click to the right and click the "Click here when finished" button. This sets the main x-touch to channels 1-8, and the extender to 9 - 16. Then save your profile within the Mackie Control dialog.

ryecatchermark I have a X-Touch Compact that I bought new a few months ago.
Is anyone else hearing a noise issue?
