Bella Luna~ re-sung and tweaked with your help...thanks :)

I did some fixin' and lowered some noisy things, and got rid of most of the cricket sounds... This is a kind of love song to a young woman full of beauty and way too much self hate.

Thanks for the listen.

I guess it sounds alright. Different than what I am used to. So perhaps another person can comment on it, but I thought the mix sounded okay.

Yeah.  It's different.  Probably too different for this neck of the woods :) I appreciate the ears and honesty.  Good to get a response.

Wow!  Is that your mug on your SC page, Rick?

Song and vox dominance is most excellent here, IMHO.
Poetic, hearty, minimalistic, creepy, scratchy, and raw.

Outro seems a little forced/gasping ... like you only did one desperate take (scrambling for the cheat-cheat? -- ha ha).

But the rest of the song seems perfect enough (where the desperate vibe works exceedingly well): other than that, nothing stands out as negative to my ears.

10/10 for 'instant song', haunting melody, and strong subconscious vibe that hooks well.  (Personally, I'd prefer simpler lyrics to haunt me as I'm not the Broadway Manhattan type)

Hello Philip..........Thanks for response! I guess it's rough ...I'll mess around a bit more with it tonight. I'm happy you liked the vocal. I'm never sure about those things. Yeah, that's a pic of me on a good day. Thanks very much for your vivific comments.

I didn't get to your post before you deleted the song but I did go to your SoundClick page and listen to Bella Luna.  Was that the it?  If so, I think it is terrific.  It is very creative -- as usual --- and has almost a stage theatrical sound to it.  It has a very haunting and absorbing atmosphere that would lend itself to the stage.  The instrumentation really carries the vocals/lyrics well.
This is a really interesting song and IMHO very well done!!!!

I listened to Bella Lunna... it's different ... kinda like a Cirque Du Solei meets German caberet ....

Not the typical RG's kind of tune.

I still liked it due to it's uniqueness.

I had to go and revisit a few of your older ones.  Really enjoyed Hard Left Turn.

didnt dig the intro, for me it was too pitchy and it was stretching the time signature a little too much...

having said that I really enjoyed it when the backing synth came in half way through the song became more structured and the melody stronger.

I thought the mix was bang on.

And there is emotion put in to the song which is always the most important.

Dude dont take my opening comments to heart, I do not listen or enjoy indie music and write soppy sickly pop instead so take that as you will.

    Great, work

Brian Wilson meets Angelo Badalamenti or Surf’s Up in Vienna. Dario Argento will be contacting you shortly. Very dark . . . sort of  - as it’s also tender in a strange way – the pizzicato strings (I think that’s what I am hearing) and the acoustic bass set it all up for me and carry tune. The section at 1:35 is really a strong contrast but because the instrumentation is so quirky it almost slips by unnoticed. Great lyrics – as enigmatic as the music  - terrific choices on the underlying chords – you transition between keys smoothly –(I think you’re changing keys – maybe it’s the shifting major/minor feel?). As I have come to expect – it’s not quite like anything I’ve ever heard before, enjoyable and a solid tune. I think you have to hear it several times before it sinks in just how cool this is.

Cian.................It is very sparse and pitchy.  It's good to hear that it's not working at the intro.  I'll revamp with more vocals per Manny's idea.  Thank you for coming by to listen!

Manny..............Man, those are some remarkable names you mention...i love that stuff and am flattered to be in the same paragraph! :)
Your vocal idea is brilliant!  Brilliant i say.  I'll work it up and let you know if i can pull it off.  Thank you for your support and friendly ears.

This sounds so much like everything I hear today (NOT!) :-)

I'm not sure how much I like the "heavy" tremolo, but then again? I've always been a little shaky when it comes to tremolo? The upright is an interesting touch. While it was better than Bella Mouth (that monster hit from Deliverance) it wasn't my favorite wreckless tune.

Rick, It's an interseting tune. I can easily imagine this ending up on the sound track for some movie. I don't feel that the recording is really doing the song any justice at the moment. I think that if you put some more thought and time into it, it could be much better. Some crits: (and as always, just my opinion, subjective and subject to being wrong):

Ditch the piano (or any other instrument) in the first verse. Let your voice carry it. You have a great voice. There's no reason to be shy, and this is the perfect spot to let it shine a bit. It will let the song build.

I don't care for the delay on the piano. I think I understand what you're going for, but it isn't working. Maybe (just maybe) it would work if the timing was better. I'm not a big fan of perfect timing, but there is a fine line between perfect timing and raw. Too raw is not good.

Lyrically (as uasual for you ), the song is very solid. I have only one crit: "Your fragile kiss my soul Elixir"... After listening to the song a couple of times, this line still sticks out like a sore thumb. Yes, it's 'on target', but it just doesn't 'fit' with the rest of the lyrics. Just my opinion.

That's my thoughts on this. I'm no rocket scientist or musical superstar, so take it for what you think it's worth. I think it's a great little tune. It just needs a little TLC.

I think this is a great piece of work. One of the most creative things I've heard in quite a while. While depressing and sad, it is inspiring at the same time.

I agree with the previous comment. Just the vox at first. Lose the vibrato on the piano. To me it is clearly a theatric piece and the vibrato is just out of place IMHO. Other people are saying you have pitchy spots. That may be a result of the vibrato on the piano.

Maybe it's just me but I think the piano is too dark. Granted it's a dark song but it's like the old tone know is turned to low. IMO, it needs to be a little more brighter. The bass line is really cool.

    An extremely well crafted work!

    Much, much better.

The first time I listened, I enjoyed a very nice work.

The second time I listened a little more.

I still think the piano is a little dark but it does fit the song.

It feels like the lower frequencies are fighting for space. Maybe roll off the low end on the piano some. Start at maybe 120hz and move it up or down till it gels better.

There is clipping near the end. I would bring things down some and keep an eye on the master bus. Without compression, have it peak around -2.1 (give or take a few -.something). Then add very little keeping the same db. The rest of the levels come in the mastering.

    Very well done!

Wow Rick... What a world of difference those changes made.. Love it just the way it is! Even the one line that didn't sit well with me upon first listen, seems perfectly fine now (oops..). I think this may very well become my new favorite Reckless Gents tune. Very solid writing, and very unique. Much impressed!

Big difference - much more grounded and balanced. The piano keeps it together in this version and the sound of the piano is much more “real” as opposed to the “dreamy” vibe of the previous track. The vocal also comes across as more polished and confident.
I love the song - I find myself singing it from time to time during these last few days, but in truth, I am not sure which version I prefer. The previous version had, for lack of a better word, a desperation  about it. A sense of “this is my last chance to make my case”. I’ll have to let the new track sink in for a while.
    Great stuff.

Very different, very different!! I would consider doing the vocals over again, but this time, but your deepest heart and soul into it and keep it as solid as cobalt steel. Some of the vocal lines just seem to get lost for me and I'm positive you can nail it. It is agreat start for what it is, but something like this, you have to nail it or it just doesn't work. Sing it like your at an interview to get this piece on a theactrical stage with a big major production company and there is a panel of judges sitting there to give their response.

You asked for help, so I am just being honest from a listeners point and not trying to make you feel good, but rather want you to win the race for the part in the play. Heart and soul is all it needs and you will have a winner. Find the right depth in your vocals for every line and you can't loose with this one. Being different and way out there, it needs to stand tall and on the money.

Just trying to be helpful and honest, now go give it your best.

    Blessings, John

The song makes me smile, as always. Quirky and original and well-done. I always love to hear you play the piano, but this time, something about the sound of it isn't doing it for me. (the bass part of it). But take that with a huge grain of salt! :) Glad to hear you playing and making music again.

Wow Rick, I didn't get a chance to hear the version you deleted either, but this was truly fantastic. The lyrics are genius as is the accompanying music.

This might be my new favourite of yours.

    Love it!

    Mark.

Hey Darin, I love when it starts to get better..:) Your help was momentous...as always, your ears are right on.  I am hoping you're still creating hits.  I would love a link.

Here go Rick. I haven't messed with Soundclick for a while, so decided to upload some new tunes.

This is so much better. There is still a clip at 2:47 into 2:48. It's either a clip or "clip" in your tracks that needs attention. I get noises like that sometimes when clips start. I just zoom in and adjust the crossfade till it stops.

    The mix is great!

Notation, the original DAW. Everything else is just rote. We are who we are and no more than another. Humans, you people are crazy.

    Hey RICK
Very UNIQUE . . . but  that's how you roll.  Your style of piano playing is killer.  Nice. . . the way this piece flows into the "SEE MY BELLA LUNA" hook.  Very cool synth pad you used fits the vibe and adds space to this piece.  GREAT tune!
