Benefits in upgrading from XP x64 to Win 7 for use with Sonar X1 Producer?
Hi all, I've been using Sonar 8 Producer for some time and recently upgraded to X1 Producer. I'm wondering if running in XP x64 causes X1c to take a performance hit since it's not a supported operating system for this version? Any comments on your experience are appreciated. Then would Win 7 Home Premium or Professional make a big difference in the upgrade, or do the Professional or Ultimate versions have more processes running to support, thus sucking up CPU time and throughput? Also if you have any info on the software or it's library dependencies that might cause it to run slower. All this, because Sonar 8 Producer never gave me dropouts. I've installed the X1c 64 bit version and 32 bit; including the VSTi s and plugins, and do run up to 50+ tracks and 8 soft synths. Thanks.
Sonar 8 Producer; Sonar X1c; Intel E7500, 2 GB RAM, GT520 1GB Graphics Dual monitors, 7500rpm system disk + RAID 0 Audio n Content Disk. Camel Audio Alchemy 1.2, Z3ta+2. Rewired together with Reason 5 and Live 8. All floating in WinXPx64. Too bad Steinberg's Dongle died, I'm not using them ever again.

At this stage of the game Win 7 64 will be an upgrade. As good as XP is/was 7 is better in a lot of respects, mainly because X1's new GUI is designed to work better with Aero and also 7 is better than XP at dealing with dual and/or multi core CPUs so you'll get more performance. I rode XP for 5 years and it was great for me at the time, but since switching to 7 2 years ago I haven't looked back.

I made the jump last year from XP to 7. I missed the Vista train. From what I heard I'm glad I did. Anyway, the transition was absolutely painless. I am glad to say I had no major issues with the transition to X1 as well. 64 bit is rockin'!

Win XP64, Intel E7500, 2 GB RAM Are you planning on building a new machine? Or do you just feel like spending a few days installing an OS... and all it's updates, and all your applications, and all your application's updates? If you do it... get another stick of memory, maybe a mother board, and a 8 core processor before you start. best regards, mike

I'm still on XP PRO, at 32 bits and have no problems. I'm running 4g of memory and everything in X1 rocks along pretty solidly. I'll upgrade when I'm forced to do so for one brick wall reason or another, but until I hit that brick wall, I believe if it's working fine for me now.... don't try to fix what ain't broken.

I went the Win7 Pro 64 bit route, after getting another stick of memory, a new board and a 4(8) Core processor. I run either the 32 bit version or the 64 bit version of Sonar on it. I like it. I have an XP Pro x86 partition in it too. I've since stopped running Sonar on that though.

Somewhat counter to Mike's "advice", I upgraded from XP to Win7 on the same machine, changing no hardware, and it was completely fine. You can download Microsoft's upgrade advisor tool, which will give you a detailed view of how well your hardware will work with win 7: http://www.microsoft.com/...splaylang=en&id=20 So no need to guess, or randomly buy components, or any of that silliness.

i also installed (not upgraded) on the same hardware i'd used for xp (& ubuntu) without changing anything; if you want to make the most of your 64 bits, get as much ram as your mobo will support

I guess it's a matter of perspective. When I went with Win 7 64 I also got an i7 and all that stuff... so the idea of wasting all that time hot rodding an old system seemed unnecessarily incremental. The old system still runs great too. best regards, mike

Hi all, thanks for the replies. I really wanted to build a new i7 with 8Gigs RAM, but decided to spend on Sonar X1, Software, and licenses; this time of the year. Too bad my MOBO restricted in hardware to address 2GB RAM max. Hopefully Win 7 and the latest hardware will stop audio drop outs and strange GUI effects for me. Especially the load distribution on the cores, like when one of them hits max it goes 'splat'. BTW I have to say that I'm enjoying this version of Sonar, very usable and it looks sweet too. No worries, I don't have problems working with less that 24 tracks audio. Cheers!

I think the lack of RAM will be an issue. I installed W7 64 on my 4GB system just this week and Windows Task Manager tells me I'm using around one gig with nothing running except antivirus (AVG) and Aero. Deactivating Aero doesn't seem to make that big of a difference either. Sven
