Berkley On Line?
I'm considering taking the online course offered by The Berkley School of Music "Music Production Using Sonar". Does anyone out there have any experience with this course and able to render an opinion on it's value.

I can't comment on that particular course but I took a couple courses a few years ago. They were very good, but very expensive. I could have gotten the same information through careful study on my own, but it was still a good experience. Due to the price back then and the availability of other resources, I'd check other options first.
HP Z220 Workstation I7 3770, 8 GB RAM, Windows 10, Sonar Platinum, RME Multiface II via PCIe, JBL 4326 w/sub, AvanTone MixCubes

As both an avid fan of Scott's most excellent book an a Berklee Alumni, I would go with Scott's book if you have your own disciplines... The Berklee class if you need/enjoy a more interactive instruction and optimally...? I'd probably want them both as they will approach things a bit differently and greatly support each other thereby enhancing the learning experience...

Thanks everyone for the replies. I've been using Scotts books since I first got int0 X1 a few years ago and am very fond of them. Now using X2 and it occures to me that perhaps a more guided and structures instruction might be useful in fill the gaps that I feel I have in my knowledge base. But, the price is high and that's why I was wondering if anyone had actually taken the course.

I just finished taking one of the Berklee free online course through Coursera. It was an Introduction to Music Production Class, and I took it because I was trying to get one of my guitar playing friends to get more into Sonar, so we took it together. This course was a 6-week subset of one of their regular courses. I thought the instructor was good, but the material was really pretty basic. I certainly would not have been happy if I had spent a lot of money on a course that was constructed at that level, even for an introductory course. We spent a week on essentially how to use a delay. I think the Power books from Scott give you every bit of bang for the buck, as far as Sonar training, comparatively speaking, but then again, a Berklee collection of courses on Sonar should be seriously in-depth, for the kind of money they charge. There is a tremendous amount of information on Sonar available, either from books like Scott's, or from the zillions of YouTube videos out there, both free and commercially available. I would think you could find just about everything you would want out there in some form. Bob Bone

Saving our pennies for the book. I often have to beat my 14 year old with a tire iron to get my X1 book from him. Your books have been a great resource for us.

Once again, thanks everyone. Based on your comments, I'm leaning toward a self guided course of study and putting the money into more equipment. After all, isn't "more equipment" what we all crave anyway. If however I do decide to enter the Berklee program, I'll report back with my impressions. Good music making to you all.

I would recommend both Groove3 and MacProVideo web sites, FastBikerBoy's SWA series (available IIRC from the Cakewalk store), and Cakewalk U for well produced and informative videos. In addition to Sonar specific tutorials Groove3 has some really excellent stuff on producing in general. They may not have the cache that the Berklee stuff does but are a really cost effective way to start learning. Regards,
