Best Effects for Strings

I'm using EWQl silver strings.I'm wondering does anyone have any favourite effects/panning or tips/tricks using Sonar X1 to getting a really good string sound. My strings sound good but I'm just looking for that little bit of extra polish to get a really big full sound.I know some of you would have your favourite way of acheiving this.Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks Justin

It really depends on the arrangement, but the best tool for the job here is EQ.
Use EQ cuts on the component tracks to make space for each other, then
(assuming everything gets summed to a buss) apply an overall high quality EQ,
something like LP64, to shape the finished sound.
I would usually disable any effects from the synth, preferring to place them after the EQ.

    Hope this helps =)

Of course panning is also key.
To the listener of a live string quartet for example, the overall width would be quite central.
A full blown orchestra on the other hand would sound huge, and this is down to how the
    instruments are grouped and placed.
Be mindful of how many instruments are in your string section and use pan accordingly.

All EastWest orchestral instruments are already panned according to generally accepted orchestral seating positions. Unless you're looking to deviate from this (nothing wrong with that), there's really no need to change them. As for the "big orchestral" sound you mentioned, layering is the preferred method used by most. And this may also include samples from non EastWest libraries.

I'd also like to bring to your attention EastWests "Spaces" 24 bit convolution reverb. To my ears, it is nothing less than incredible. Might be worth your time to take the demo for a spin, and even though you need an iLok key to do this, you're already set up with it.

    I agree, Space is awesome

As far as EW being too wet, if you have the close mics as an option this will help with that.  I generally use a mix of close and mid mics leaving the surround mics for things like choirs and maybe some background percussion things.  If you dont have close mics in your package it can sometimes be a little washy with reverb.

Usually put just a touch of a rich simmery chorus effect on an auxiliary bus. I like to add that little touch of movement - my goto chorus is Blue Chorus.
Secondly I take almost everything under 3Khz out from the reverb - I like to hear the tail only.
For a slow track I have used a delay with a 50 - 100 millisec delay to create a bit of live 'feel' slapback and sync'd to the temp half or quarter beat.
I am not keen on a washy sound - just a touch - you can always add a touch more to balance with the other instruments in the mix.

    Just some thoughts

You use what ever works for that particular song. There is no best effect for this, as you will need to use different things for every song. Your ears are your best tools, along with the knowledge of how to use your effects.

    +1 ... I'm leaning a lot here.

EQ used judiciously with envelopes can really help guitars and such ... why not strings ... to come forward or push backward.

Also, EWQL strings may be pushed far L or R to make room for central vocs and bass instruments ... while still yielding a pad element ... with reverb going down the middle, or down the same side.

Note: Silver might not have close mics, iirc ... and//or I'd cringe to hear them too closely, fwiw.

There is a good short article in Sound On Sound about strings:-

    http://www.soundonsound.com/sos/mar08/articles/stringsinahurry.htm

It includes tips on arrangements and mixing, and mentions automated EQ and reverb.
