Best Entry/Mid Level Audio Interface for Windows 7 64-Bit?

Hi,

I'm currently using an M-Audio Audiophile 2496 PCI. However, since upgrading to Windows 7 64-Bit, it's been real crap. I've done tons to shutdown unnecessary services, disable Intel Speed-Step, etc, etc. However, I'm still getting drop outs and clicks/pops. Lately, I'm having to push the buffers to 512... which seems a bit extreme to me.

Anyway, I'm looking to get something better. Unfortunately, I can't afford to spend the money on something too high end like an RME or Lynx. I'm looking to keep it around $200... maybe stretching to $300 if I had too. My home studio is really just a 'serious' hobby, so spending $500 or more just isn't in the cards. ;)

I'm current considering the Echo Audiofire 2, or perhaps the yet to be released Mackie Onyx Blackjack. I need something with solid Windows 7 64-Bit drivers and low latency, as I do run a handful of VST instruments, guitar modelers, and effects.

If it matters this is my current system spec:

Windows 7 64-Bit
Intel Core2 Duo 3.33Ghz
Intel DX38BT Motherboard (TI 1394 Chipset)
4GB RAM
Sonar 7 Home Studio
M-Audio Audiophile 2496
Mackie 402-VLZ3 Mixer

Thanks for any advice!

Hello... have you run DPC latency checker... you now have things running in the background using up CPU power with WIN 7... here is the Web site for a free download... http://www.thesycon.de/deu/latency_check.shtml  also you can set your CPU core priority on your audio program, in the task manager, to real time from normal...

The TC Twim Impact is about $400.  Very good soundwise and they just did a 64 bit upgrade to software/drivers.  Can't say enough about the sound.  For less you can probably find a Konnekt 6 desktop.  Same remote, DSP and is on sale.  SOS found it best in class for converters (all their products seem to use the same converters, preamps, except for upgrades, and most importantly, drivers).   Audiomidi has them for $200.

Go to the forum to make sure the latest 64 bit drivers are for PC.  I run 32 bit so I haven't paid much nevermind.  As always, make sure you can return it if it doesn't like your system.

    Greetings folks.

I'm a similar boat to SC2071, having just upgraded to something that's at least a good step-up from my crappy 5-year-old Toshiba laptop.

    Windows 7 64-bit
    Intel i7 720QM
    8 GB RAM
    TI Firewire shipset
    Sonar 8.53

Maybe a little ridiculous, but having shelled out on the laptop, I've still got my old EMU-0404 USB, which doesn't have a driver for Windows 7-64.

I'm guessing this is why I keep getting 'fatal exception' errors whenever I use Rapture (the old 'c00000005', which I believe tends to signal an IRQ conflict, probably due to unsuited driver).

Anyhoo, hopefully I'm picking up a used (but mint condition) Edirol/Cakewalk FA-66 tomorrow for £100 ($150), partly because it's cheap, and also since other owners seem to like it on this forum.

More importantly, it has a Win 7-x64 driver, and I'll be able to use that TI Firewire set instead of USB, which I'm hoping will be far more stable.

I'll let you know how I get on!

Well, I got the new interface, works well, but was still getting this irritating Rapture LE error.

Solved it though -- despite having the latest version of Sonar, the Rapture LE .dll was version 1.1. I upgraded to the latest rapture dll one and it's fine now.

FWIW, The Audiophile should work fine under Win7x64.
I've got many clients running the Audiophile 192 (same driver) with no problems.
I think you have a config issue that needs to be sorted out.

I'm running a M-Audio Firewire Solo which I can't really complain about. I thought I would run into major issues when I upgraded to Win 7 x64 but nope. All is cool. I was THIS close to selling it and buying the Line6 Toneport ux2 because I wanted the extra line in's and Pod Farm, but then I remembered, if it ain't broke, don't fix it! lol

    Rock on!
