Best File Format to import into Sonar from other platforms including MAC...

My commercial broadcast business has been so slow lately I've been thinking of converting one of our "almost never used" suites into a music mix room.  In short, I'd be moving my music production studio into that room.  As some know I have a fairly extensive plugin effect and instrument roster...most of the "higher end" stuff and could market to local bands recording in less than ideal studios and folks who have home DAWs that are not so well equipped with third party plugs and instruments.

In any case, and since many folks will probably have their stuff in MAC/ProTools format I'd like to know of anyone's experience in porting in projects to X2 and exactly what file formats (I'm guessing AIFF) they use.  Any info will be appreciated.  Thanks.

    Hi Yorolpal

I've imported Logic OMF files fairly easily into Sonar.  You lose any midi data and things didn't line up perfectly without matching the two project tempos, but that wouldn't have been a problem with stems.  As far as export, as well as OMF, Logic 9 can export aiff, caf or wave files.

Hope that is of some help?

AIFF or Wave file is the best format. There isn't any difference between the 2 when it comes to sound quality. You just export it (or them) as an AIFF or Wave file and if do not dither or convert the sample rate and bit depth if you are going to continue to work on those tracks. You also make sure you export each track at the same timeline, so they match up in the next project. Or just export an a Broadcast Wave file

Since your using Pro Tools on the MAC, you would need a converter that cost up to $500 for OMF, so PMF is not a good choice for you.

    Thanks fellers.

PS: I'm not using a MAC I'm running X2 on a pc.  I just assume that most of the projects I'll be getting to mix will be in ProTools.

Olpal, if clients are sending you projects using PT, you'll most likely get AIFF files. Sonar loves them and gets a nice diet of them weekly from me. :) If those clients have omf capability, that's really cool too as it will open up the project for you with no plugs or panning etc.

But WAV & AIFF would be my preference.

CJ: Just so you know, Avid waived the .OMF converter fee and have included it as a part of PT since version 9 or 10 I believe. So you may start seeing quite a few OMF's coming in on your end brother. I've been getting them like mad here.

Olpal, just for the record my friend, if you can afford a current version of PT, it may be a good idea to consider it. Even if you just run it on another pc or a laptop. The reason being, not all PT users are sold on the newer versions. This means they would not be able to give you an OMF like CJ mentioned as the older versions of PT do NOT just give you OMF ability. Thay had to pay extra for it.

The other thing is the older versions do NOT sport fast bounce. So for them to even send you WAV files or AIFF files, they would need to slow bounce each and every file out of the program...which would take so long, they probably wouldn't even use your services.

If you have PT, this stops your clients that may have older versions of PT from having to do this. They can send you the PT session file, you import it, then export using OMF and bang...import right into Sonar and you're in business. :) I do it all the time here. We do actually use PT when we need to, but *I* don't because I just can't stomach it. My main engineer is a master with it so he does all our PT work....but even he is exporting OMF's out of the jobs we get unless it is specified that we MUST use PT. Good luck with everything. :)

Thanks Danny, ol pal!  I think I'll do just what you suggest.  Sounds like a great solution.
