Best Fish n' Chips Ever!

At noon my partner and I decided to do lunch out today and I fancied good ol' Fish and Chips as I can't remember the last time I had them.

So off we went to the local chip parlour as I hadn't checked it out in ages and boy was I in for a nice surprise they've really upped their game and although a little pricey @ £6 a portion I can safely say this was the best fish and chip meal I have had EVER anywhere!

This fish was fresh succulent and cooked to perfection with the crispiest batter coating and the chips too were the mutts, not over oily, beautiful tasting, piping hot and a lovely golden colour.  The restaurant and kitchen was clean as whistle and courteous yet friendly staff made the rather stark and overspacious restaurant seem cozy enough.

Of course I didn't go on such a treat for my own benefit, oh no!  Just that I know my mate Ed is coming over in Sept and I want to make sure he gets the best of British when he's here.

After blowing out like that I'd crashed out within 5 minutes of getting back indoors and have just since arisen.  Fortified and one happy bunny!

Jonbouy has upped the game for Strammy.

Remember Strammy, F&C is more my style than that Vindaloo stuff you tout around here.

Fish and Chips tend to come in US-style portions too! I think cos cod and haddock are soo expensive now, chippies tend to have upped their game and the last couple of times i've had 'em (one in Blackpool, one in Essex) it's been good!

Memorare debut album 'Philistine' available now http://blackwoodproductio...philistine-digipack-cd

I'm sure he'll need more than one meal while he's over here being American an' all.

And I perfected my recipe for Spotted Dick many years ago which I'm sure he'll enjoy for dessert.

Thank you Victoria.  I am glad to know it was Victoria.  What was her secret anyway.

THat was the best F&C I ever had, though there is a sushi/robata place here about 1 mile (974 km) from my office that has flounder fish and chips.  They have been sold out of the fresh flounder each time I have gone to try it.

    flounder

Isn't flounder what we call Plaice, commonly available in Fish Shops here?

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/European_plaice

edit: nope Flounder is what we call fluke.

Mind you, when I'm fishing anything I catch is known as fluke.

We have 3 chippies in my local metropolis.  One is on a road in the middle of nowhere so is discounted on the grounds of unreasonable access issues.  Another is really a kebab place which does perfect donners of the friday night variety, but the F&C is crap.  But the third one stayed up.  Interestingly they also upped their ante in the last year with a full redecoration, new-look laminated menu and correspondingly raised prices.  The only trouble is that one of the servers looks the spitting image of Roger Waters.  I find that somewhat disturbing, but she's very pleasant even when I keep asking questions like 'Mother, do you think they'll drop the bomb?'

Hey, if Bap's over in Sussex later in the year fancy a pint?  Or is this a closed CHB thing?

    Expensive though!

They used to be, now most chippys use a vegetable oil based product called "I Can't Believe its Not Lard".

My local chippy here in Dubai is pretty authentic with two servers of South Asian decent and broad Glaswegian accents. But its far too expensive.

    Intel i7 3770K @4.4GHz, 32GB RAM, 240GB SSD System disk, 2 x 2TB and 1 x 1TB (with SSD Cache) HDD. Windows 10,  Sonar Platinum. Roland Quad Capture.

Yeah, it be vegetable oil nowadays for most. Same in Australia, I suppose they've become more health conscious!  I have noticed in the USA some chefs secretly blend pork fat with vegetable oil, the reason being is that the pork adds more flavor.

I've lived in the North and the South and there's definitely two distinct styles.

Northern chippys tend to have that lardy taste with Haddock being the Fish if you just ask for 'one of each'.  Southern ones tend to be groundnut oil based with Cod being the preferred fish.

Being the soft southerner I am I generally prefer the 'Southern' seaside style although both have their advocates and devotees.

I'm sure the trade has standard fats for the job and that they are blends these days the oil not being pure groundnut nor the hard fat being pure lard.
