Best Mic for Male Vocals & Steel String Acoustic for under $400 max.

Hi all

Am setting up a small room for a colleague and all he needs is   1   Mic  that he will use for  Vocals [ Male ]  and  then alternatley for Steel String acoustic.

His budget is  $400  absolute max.  and the Mic will be going into his Mackie XDR2 pre's and then  direct-insert-out  into his RME Babyface.

New or 2nd hand is OK.

My sugestion was a Rode NT 1A  but Mics arent my specialty.

Any and all suggestions would be much appreciated.

Thanks,
tim

the rode is not a bad choice.  it should serve him well.

however, you're going to get 20 different answers from 15 different people, you realize that, right?

also look at the Shure SM-27

Two great choices I would look at would be a Shure SM7b (need a high gain pre-amp though) and a
Sennheiser MK-4 (made in germany I believe, basically a no-frills homestudio budget Neumann)

Also may want to try an Audio Technica 4033, or any of the '40 series from Audio Technica

Your friend should try and go to a place where he can try the mics out in store and see what he likes best

I agree that the SM7B would be a good choice for vocals, but I'm not sure I'd use it on steel string acoustic.  that's just my opinion, tho.

Another vote for Shure condensers. I know you listed $400 but if you could save up another $150 and get the KSM 32 you'd not regret it. Shure makes awesome mics.

    Hi Timboe,

You won't find a mic that is completely optimum for both his voice and acoustic guitar.
LDC mics are flattering for vocals... but slow the transients on acoustic instruments. (mass of the diaphragm)
One of the most versatile mics that exists is the AKG C414.
Thus, at the $400 mark... I'd recommend the AKG C214.

I'm with Beagle regarding the SM7B. Vocals yes, acoustic, not so much.

    $400 ....hmm. I'm thinking Rodes.

    Gear: A bunch of stuff.
