Best Mike for Live Rock Recording?

I want to record a live perfomrance of a garage raock band. I have a pair of Shure SM-58s and a pair of Pacifica 1" diaphram condenser mikes. I will put one set of mikes on either side of the stage and record into my R/L input conputer, i.e., no mixing board. Is there any reason to use one versus the other?

Thanks,

Larry Williams

sm57 is exactly the same mic as the 58.

    Use either.

It's not the way I would do it (can you not take a direct output from the desk?)

    Kind regards

The question is, should I use the SM57/58 or the 1" condenser? No, I can not record direct, I need to mike the auditorium.

The condensor may have a better frequency response. Try those first.

If time permits, try to record the sound check with both sets of mics. Then listen back through cans and let your ear tell you which is better.

So your not gonna use a mixer/preamp?

I assume your direct audio interface has 48v phantom power? Or are the condensers "electret" (battery powered)?

Have you tried both types of mics on your setup?

I would guess the "condensors" have far more sensitivity than the dynamics. My first guess is the condensers are the choice to make.

    Are you concerned about phase?

Would you consider X/Y or ORTF patterns as a substitute for your plan to mic from each side of the stage?

Are you prepared to find out that your results from the recording technique you describe are gonna sound.... ****ty?

If you want to distance mic and get good results... ONLY work in a good sounding room. (FWIW I have in the past recorded "garage bands" in classical perfortmance auditoriums... in showcase presentations... but there is an inescapable irony to the task you have at hand) Bring your best condenser mics. And bring some smoking preamps that have both gobs of gain AND an ability to smooth out the wild array of transients your are gonna encounter.

Sounds like you are trying to do someone a favor... I applaud that... but it's going to be difficult to get good results with the approach you are taking.

    best regards,
    mike
