I think Baps said "best" there Maurice, ol pal.  Not most wonderfully inane.

His best are two you've probably never seen.  "The Offense" and, one of my top five of all films, "The Hill".

Haven't seen it for a few years, but The Hill is a bleak, powerful film portaying
British soldiers in a brutal military prison.

I remember being quite stunned by Connerys performance. He has a very charismatic
screen presence, but in this film he doesn't rely on that. Fantastic performance.

I liked Sean and the rest of the cast in Red October, but it seemed like they spent all the money up front and didn't have enough left to make the torpedo animations more realistic and to get rid of the matte lines at the end of the movie while they were on the conning tower of the sub in New England.

Right Strummy, Everyone was a revelation in that dang movie.  Not one sour note in the whole bunch.  Ya gotta love Ossie Davis too!

PS:  Ol Sidney Lumet likes em yellin and cryin and caterwaulin in almost all of his movies.  Dog Day Afternoon to The Verdict.  But he gets dang good performances out of his actors and knows how to tell a story and keep ya riveted.

I liked "Robin & Marian". It's a art form of it's own to kill the hero in movies.  It's done in such a touching way in this one.

I also loved the small realistic touches, like Robin Hood peeing in the smoking fire at foggy dawn.

I find there are surprisingly few Connery films with a proper manuscript/story. All the Bond films are written for 10 year old, and most of the rest are below mediocre stuff in which Connery seems to be hired only to keep the production from flopping.

Hard to say whether it's due to Connerys poor judgement, his agents poor judgement or the fact that in the end he's not that great an actor, but has magic visual charisma.

I'm not saying he's bad, but I wouldn't say he's much above mediocre either. His acting in "Man who would be king" did not impress me, even though the film is one his best ones. I know I've seen "The Hill" but I don't remember it.

Connery's gotten so far with that certain Bond-face (a bit like Roger Moore), and when he got older, with his stunning charisma. In the end scene of Red October when he's standing on the deck of the sub in the moonlight he looks so good that even heterosexual men sigh out loud.

The biggest problem to me is, as I said, he's performed in too many poor films.

I don't think he'll never be referred to as a great actor, but as the man who became an icon building the image of James Bond, and who got popular because he simply is a respected pro and a nice chap. Then again, John Wayne got bigger than life, an icon of icons, and he had only one face and one phrase.

Before this thread dies I have to mention Connery's role in A Bridge Too Far. Colonel or Sgt. Major, Connery just nails it.

Was "The Hill" filmed in black & white?? I watched it on an old 50's TV. Very Intense.
