Miroslav Philharmonik. Super simple with a great sound out of the box.

musicman100 EWQL Gypsy... +1 IK Obi Miroslav Philharmonik. Super simple with a great sound out of the box. +1 Obi it is indeed a great synth but I think for solo violin, Gypsy is more suitable because of the articulations. Really responds well to live playing. I would think if a person plans to program the articulations, Philharmonik is the way to go. I only have about 5 sample libraries, those 2 are my favorite

Mesh Kirk Hunter Solo Strings http://www.kirkhunterstudios.com/products_solo_str_ii2.html I am a big fan of Kirk Hunter strings. My favorite solo violin is actually in his Diamond Orchestra; it is his romantic violin. It is stunningly gorgeous, emotive, expressive, tearful--yeah I am sold on it.

I recently purchased Spitfire Audio Solo Strings and am really liking the sound of them. They sound quite alive and the legato patch sound very nice. I'll also give EWQL Gypsy a +1 for the violin. It's really fantastic, though personally I'm not liking the PLAY engine... But that's my personal opinion and shouldn't prevent anyone from going for it. :) With Gypsy you get other good stuff as well (especially the trombone and the guitars). I can also recommend Vienna's strings (I have the Special Edition). With these though you have to be prepared to do a little more tweaking as the sound is really raw and dry. But they sound fantastic. The Kirk Hunter violin is also nice. It works really well straight out of the box. Then there's always AudioBro' LA Scoring Strings First Chair 2... http://audiobro.com/la-scoring-strings/la-scoring-strings-first-chair/

I have got AAS String Studio and they have got some rather nice solo string sounds. They are not using samples either, it is a modelling instrument. Violin is a hard one. My wife is a beautiful violinist and she is always telling me those synths and VST's are just no good. She is right, the real deal is way better. It depends too in what context. If it is just a line playing more in the background as part of a larger arrangement then any of the above suggestions will work (including AAS, I have used the solo Cello patch very well in some situations) but if its solo violin and maybe another instrument it is much harder.

I am a huge fan of Kirk Hunter's strings. I have both the Diamond Symphony Strings and the Concert Strings II packages. I am sure you would love either one. He had a huge sale on this stuff last year in a group purchase. Don't know if that happened this year.

Garritan makes a solo violin as well as the gofriller solo cello. Might be worth a listen.

The Garritan solo violin and cello have been discontinued. They were supposed to be replaced by the GOS2 library which has never been released. Jim

vintagevibe I still like Miroslav but the lack of key switching makes it too cumbersome these days. Also... any change in articulation with Miroslav pretty much means another midi channel and another instrument. IF you are back and forth pizz, arco, stacatto and so on it can be a beast. John

The trick to expressive strings in Miroslav is velocity layers. Although not suitable for any kind of serious orchestration, for pop & rock strings it's adequate and a bargain at the current price. Velocity layering requires only a single MIDI channel. Yes, it does require loading multiple instruments - but any sampler does, and compared to, say, Kontakt, Miroslav is much lighter on RAM. That said, the OP specifically asked for the "best" solo violin, and Miroslav ain't in the running. Spitfire's Albion Solo Strings, however, are a contender for that title. At nearly 300 bucks, they won't be finding their way onto my hard drive anytime soon, but as soon as my lottery investments start paying off it's on my shopping list.

+1 on the EW Gypsy Violin. I have a few solo violins, and so far I haven't found any magic bullet. They all have their strengths (well ... most have some strengths) and weaknesses. I find myself choosing my violin by 'shootout', and the EW Gypsy violin is usually right up there. I have the QL Solo violin too, but the Gypsy Violin usually beats it out hands down. Again though ... so many variables, it depends on the piece. I have the new Embertone upgrade and it's quite a cool piece of kit, allows for some very expressive playing. However, like I said, I've not found any one solo library that cuts the mustard across the board. It works really well for some stuff, and not others. I'll be trying some more with the Embertone now I have the upgrade, but in the last two works I did, it's the Gypsy Violin that's come to my rescue. I'd have to say IMO forget Miroslav, not in the running by a country mile. No doubt, I too will be adding to my collection of Solo Violins at some stage. Hope you find what you're looking for. If you're not satisfied with EWQL, you certainly should listen to some samples from Kirk Hunter Strings. Very satisfying, and interesting settings are available.

I often wonder about such necro-posts. The bumper made their first post ever on the Cakewalk forums by reviving a 2 year old thread. Did they just randomly go to a forum and hope there's a violin thread so they could post? I guess to get hits on their music link? I dunno.
